Two teenagers struggle with identity and self-determination in Dermansky's entertaining debut.To the casual observer, twins Chloe and Sue are exactly the same—even their father mixes them up sometimes. Of course, Chloe understands that they're very different people, but Sue wants nothing more than to be one with Chloe, whom she's convinced is prettier, smarter and nicer. The chapters alternate between the voices of Sue and Chloe, moving quickly but seamlessly through their high school years with their attendant dramas and tragedies. It feels primarily like Sue's story, though, because it is her desire to hold on to her perfect intimacy with Chloe that sets the plot in motion. And it is Sue's voice—variously deadpan, yearning, and frequently repetitive to good effect—that carries most of the novel's emotional weight. (Though Chloe has her moments: "I did everything for Sue. She needed me as if I were the oxygen she breathed, but she didn't understand what it cost me.") While some aspects of the tale seem unlikely (the twins' blithely neglectful parents and extremely generous friends, for example), this is balanced by an overarching fable-like quality to this moving and well-written story of two girls learning to accept who they are.

Amazing TWINS book

Marcy Dermansky's debut novel - Twins - is an amazing piece of twin fiction. Although not a twin herself, Dermansky has managed to capture what many other authors don't even bother to try: A real understanding of the complex relationship between identical twins!

The story is fast paced, very original and occasionally disturbing while managing to be alternately funny and quite a tear-jerker. (I must admit to using up half a box of tissues crying by the end of the novel - which I read in one day).

As an identical twin myself, (and twin-owner of a popular internet site for twins called Twins Realm) I was very pleasantly surprised to find the two main characters (identical twins Chloe and Sue) portrayed with real depth and understanding.

Often fiction writers use twin characters only for the convenience of their storylines, while continuing to perpetuate the common stereotypes (like `good' and `evil' twins), but Dermansky's tale is a much more realistic, sympathetic, and in-depth look at the complexity of twin experiences; it offers unique insight into the struggles faced by identical twins with issues of identity and self-determination.

A thoroughly enjoyable (and informative) novel, for twins and non-twins alike - definitely worth a read!!!

Witty and touching

I typically have little patience with coming-of-age stories or the trevails of psychodramatic teenagers, but Twins slowly wore away at my cynicism as it drew me in.

You might want to shake these girls and tell them to get their act together, but Ms. Dermansky's voice is so witty and winning that you'll be anxiously rooting for them to find happiness in the end. And I have to confess, cynic that I am, I found myself with a lump in my throat by the final chapter. It probably won't lead me to seek out other novels about the trials of teenagers, but if I had to spend 300 pages with a couple of neurotic, troubled teenage girls, I'm glad it was *these* teenage girls, and I'm glad I had this author as my charming guide.

I loved this book!

First of all, this is a great read. The book is satisfying on so many

different levels. It flows like butter. On a purely soap-opera/voyeur

level, it explores the lives of these blond twin adolescent girls, their

sex lives, and their ambition-lives. But the way in which the sex and

the various ambitions are handled takes this story deeper than a soap.

It's a soap and a literary novel rolled into one.

The voices are engaging and real. The details about the girls'

secret/inner lives ring true, yet also surprise and generally engage

you. Marcy Dermansky is an incredible writer. I've read some of her

short stories (in journals) and her language is always dead on precise.

If you look at the language closely you'll see there's not one wasted

word. Each sentence is doing so much work, evoking such subtleties of

mind and mood, bringing the story to life. The book is funny and manages

to be uplifting at the end, but the writer's vision can also go dark.

She's not afraid to examine loneliness, anger and failure. I should also

mention how original and quirky the voice is. You definitely won't have

read anything quite like it unless you've read her other work.

It's the sort of book you read and then give to all your friends and

they give to two friends and so on and so on. I'm a woman in my 30's. In

case anyone cares.

In the world of Damascus steel, Manfred Sachse is the man. This 2008 printing of the 3rd edition of Damascus steel has 2 more chapters than the 1993 printing. Good basic techniques on how to solve word problems.

How To Solve Word Problems in Geometry, 1999 edition, by Dawn Sova is worth looking at.
It does not propose to teach Geometry , ONLY to solve word problems in Geometry.

Good points :

Each chapter(11 of them) covers a Specific type of geometric problem such as Deductive Reasoning or Inequalities in Geometry.

A 50-question miscellaneous problem drill WITH ANSWERS, such as question 19 : A homeowner wants to replace a kitchen floor measuring 13 feet by 24 feet with floor tiles,....

Examples with completely worked solutions for every type of problem such as in Chapter 6 on Inequalities in Geometry, where Example 1 reads :Create a table in which you list (1) the statement (2) the contrapositive (3) the converse, and (4) the inverse of the following statement ....

Sequential procedures for all types of problems.

What makes this book special : " the knowledge of the specialized vocabulary and symbols of geometry, practice of word problems, how to read a diagram and how to draw a diagram from given information; the goal : master the basics.

Why 3 stars ? The book does not go beyond the basics,; the answers for the miscellaneous problem drill do not provide a detailed answer.

You Need More Practice and More Review? Buy if you must!

This book hardly teaches "how to solve word problem in Geometry". It just crams as much geometry definitions and theorems as it can into small space which can only confuse students that are already confused. In fact, the listing of concepts are not ordered well either.
I almost gave this book 1 star rating since I strongly believed this book DID NOT do the job as its' cover seem to promise. But!...I gave the author some credit for her good intentions and thought about some that it MIGHT benefit...
First, she gives us the shortest Geometry review ever! (I think even Cliff Notes does more)...and points to couple of examples that are somewhat helpful. It adds short exercises (about 10 per chapter) with complete solutions (which is nice). Yes, it may be good for those that want to quickly review (or the quickest review), but there are other books out there that are MUCH more...MUCH better.
I recommend: Geometry the Easy Way by L. Leff. And in many Test Prep. books like those of SAT and GRE contains surprisingly good reviews on Geometry with very insightful problems. I personally like Kaplan's materials.
One more note: The other book of this series "How to Solve Word Problems in Algebra" on the contrary does an excellent job! It really helps.

Ross Bentley is the author of the popular Motorbooks Speed Secrets series. He is a racing coach, race car driver, author, and speaker. Bentley grew up in a racing family in Vancouver, British Columbia. He raced in the CART Indy Car series in the 1990s before moving on to endurance racing, where he won the 1998 GT3 United States Road Racing Championship and the 2003 SRPII Class Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. If you have the previous iterations of his books, this doesn't add much more.

I already owned the original Speed Secrets and Speed Secrets 2 and was hoping to get a lot more insight into racing and high performance driving from this book titled "Ultimate Speed Secrets". Unfortunately, a lot of what Ross Bentley says in this new book is a copy and paste of the information in his old books. If you don't have any of his books, then I would recommend getting this one and foregoing all of the other books. If you already have the original Speed Secrets and Speed Secrets 2, then don't bother buying this one as it doesn't add much more.

The Racing bible

As many have stated this book has all the knowledge any racer would possibly need. Nothing in this book is to difficult to understand and is geared towards the beginner looking to go pro. If you truly believe you are relatively knowledgeable in chassis tuning and racing edict then a lot of this will be redundant to what you already know. But i find it useful as i have a few friends that are casual spirited drivers that always ask me questions about driving technique that i can't always break down in the most fundamental way. But every answer that i couldn't explain, i was able to pin point the exact Q and A in this book that would solve our discussions.

The next thing is finding answers to chassis tuning problems one does not fully grasp while making modifications. On my quest to improving my cars i thought i knew what modifications would be best, only to find out what i wanted didn't always translate well to the road, even when the parts i purchased were premium parts. This book helped me figure out why certain changes didn't turn out as i planned and i was able to fix my tuning course accordingly.

Note- It is best suited to look at this as a index guide not a book to read page to page. The explanations for certain topics are not in order and has bits of each subject explained over multiple chapters. If you are looking for an answer, you probably won't find it under one chapter.

Lastly - I no way should you assume simply because you have the knowledge in your brain that you will already drive better. Practice..Practice and practice some more (as with everything in life). You can read about late apex'ing all day long. Not until you actually go out and practice it over a variety of turns will you actually start to grasp what you know.

I'm the kind of guy that finds most of his information online on forums or through search engines, so naturally I shy away from books like these. This was recommended to me by some local club drivers and I decided to give it a shot. I figured I would be getting some 80s technical manual based on the cover art.

As someone with zero experience racing I found this book both engaging and very useful in understanding what it means to be a truly good driver and how to put proven techniques into practice. I've always thought driving was just a matter of pushing the pedals, switching the gears, and turning a wheel, but after reading just a few pages of the book I discovered there are a plethora of nuances that combine to create top talent.

The book is divided into three major parts.

"Part I, Building Blocks" includes eight chapters that form the foundation of the role-playing game that is developed in the book. These chapters cover subjects like Windows Forms, bitmaps, sprite animation, user input, collision detection, and similar core subjects.

"Part II, Game World" includes five chapters devoted to building the game engine components needed to manage and render the game world in which the player will live. The core of this game world is a tiled scroller and a level editor.

"Part III, Gameplay" includes seven chapters that develop all of the gameplay components of the role-playing game that make the game truly playable. Very good book

This book is great straight from the beginning. The introduction gets you excited for the rest of the book. Over all the book shows you how to create a fully functional RPG engine for free. None of the tools used in the book require you to purchase them. The author walks you through step by step how to recreate the game. Not everything is covered, but you learn a lot for the size of the book. The engine it self is a pretty advanced 2D engine with plenty of room for customization and expansion. The book also makes a great companion to C# Game Programming for Teens. With the other book you can expand a little on the game adding dungeons with much of the code being similar its not too hard to rewrite it for one or the other. Just like the C# book it comes with many tools that you can use to customize the game without even writing new code. The only flaw I see in this book is it is a little fast paced for someone new to programming. Some sections you might have to reread to understand, but the author tries to make it simple for everyone. I suggest having at least some experience with visual basic to help you out. I have not complete the book but look forward to learning new things and expanding on the game.

Very good book, it does teach well

I am a programmer for over 30 years now, got started because my mother would not buy me a Video Game system (Atari 2600) so at the age of 12 I bought a Timex Sinclair and wrote my own games. This was very fun and rewarding even as a kid, now it has turned into a lucrative career. I bought this book so my kids can have the same experience. I have been going thru the book with them and I find the book rather basic (which is good), even thought it is sold as an intermediate book. I guess it is sold that way because it does not completly hold your hand as some basic books do, but I see this as very good because it early on gets the kids using VS's built in error checking to fix mistakes. Thank you Jonathan for making this book, it was just what I needed.

Seems to be a good book. My son is reading it and using it to write a video game. We had some problems downloading the 'source code' from the book, but I emailed the author and got a quick accurate response. I'm glad he helped us out, otherwise we would not have liked the book much at all. As it stands, it is a very useful book.

About the Author

William J. Bottega is Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Rutgers University, where he has been since 1984. He received his Ph.D. in applied mechanics from Yale University, his M.S. in theoretical and applied mechanics from Cornell University, and his B.E. from the City College of New York. He also spent several years in R&D at General Dynamics where he worked on vibration and sound-structure interaction problems. In addition, Dr. Bottega is the author of numerous archival publications on various areas of theoretical and applied mechanics.

An invaluable contribution to the literature and legacy of this great herb doctor

This is a much-needed companion volume to Dr. John Christopher's original text, The School of Natural Healing. It contains a wealth of information, as well as a color photograph, of the 100 herbs most used by Dr. Christopher and in the teachings of the school he founded (by the same name as his book, The School of Natural Healing).

To be fair, it must be said that this book was not entirely authored by Dr. Christopher; it was compiled after his death by his son David Christopher who now runs the school, and another author who had worked closely with Dr. John Christopher. However, it is completely faithful to his methodology and does include a large number of Dr. Christopher's own case histories (including many I had not heard before, and I am a student at the school), his own comments and teachings on the herbs, and his formulas. I think the authors/editors and the School are so generous in giving us outright his time-tested, invaluable herbal formulas, something other herbalists would retain as a closely-held trade secret.

The book does have a few inconsistencies. For example, in the section on Barberry, an important herb in some of Dr. Christopher's formulas, little information is given on Barberry itself, but rather, the chapter focuses on Oregon Grape Root, a similar "sister herb" to Barberry which also contains the same main component, Berberine. This isn't helpful to someone who really wants to know about Barberry. And, the photograph given is of Barberry, not Oregon Grape, which has a different colored berry. There is no separate entry or photo for Oregon Grape. So that's a bit confusing. Another section (I forget where just now) said that some uses of an herb would be "listed below" and then were not.

These are fairly minor editorial issues, a little annoying, not very frequent, and minor compared to the overall usefulness of this mammoth book and its important place in the legacy of this great herbalist. Note that more detail is given in the original School of Natural Healing book on formulas and preparation methods; this Herb Syllabus book focuses on individual herbs.
