Mary Plummer has been editing film and video professionally for over 20 years. An Apple Certified Trainer in Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Soundtrack Pro, she has edited music vides, documentaries, trailers, and independent feature films, and composed original music that has been used in film and video projects from coast to coast. She is co-owner of InVision Digital and Media Arts, located in Orlando, Florida. She has been a lead trainer for Apple’s Pro Certification program for more than ten years and traveled the country and Europe training new Apple certified trainers. Not for Yosemite users.

I bought this book just before my Mac died. I went out and got an new computer w/ Yosemite installed. Despite a copyright date of 2015, the book was actually released in mid-2014, as I found out later. Altho' the book's intro states it was written on Maverick, it says you may use it with Maverick (10.9) or Yosemite (10.0). Well, that isn't the case; by p.17 the illustrations (which are so poorly printed, it's hard to make out detail) do not match up. Even poking around in the usually intuitive Apple Apps lead me down blind alleys (or created messes.)

I'm surprised at the positive reviews, not because of my personal experience, but of how poorly it's written. Some authors suffer from explaining their subject so many times they can get sloppy, lazy, or just take readers' knowledge of the subject for granted. Don't get me wrong—I have used Apple Pro Training Series Books w/ much success before. I guess like all things these days, updates are hard to keep up with.

Fabulous guided tour of everything you need to know to use GarageBand

OK, I have to confess that I have been intimidated for years by GarageBand. In recent months I succeeded, through the help of some YouTube videos, in making a simple two-track recording, but I was still completely intimidated and afraid to even touch most of the controls. Then I bought Mary Plummer's book. She starts by walking you through the download of all the resources you'll be working with to complete the book's projects, and continues with very detailed explanations and screen shots as you dive right into recording, editing, working with loops, patches, software instruments, midi, and so much more. No need to be intimidated, and if you do something unintended, you can always hit Command-Z! Thanks for a great book that has freed me to have fun with the amazing recording studio that has been lurking in my laptop.

I think this book is for earlier versions of GarageBand that I don't have. I have 10.1. Some things that are referred to are not there. Other things that are referred to don't work. I was able to work around some things but other things I was not.

Awesome!

This book has helped me immensely. I am in the first year of PA school and part of the curriculum has me doing pt interviews and physical exams on my own. I can find most of the complaints that my patients have and the book helps me remember what questions to ask and what PE to do beyond the usual OPQRSTI. My pt reports to the preceptor are more complete and organized, as are my SOAP notes.

Good book but text blurry

I think for a new third year medical student (especially one that may have taken some time off before starting clinical rotations) this book is very helpful. It lists common chief complaints and suggests questions to ask during the patient history. My copy contained some blurry text so I returned it to Amazon. I plan to re-purchase the Kindle version instead and think it will be useful.

An excellent book, an excellent idea, an excellent script!

A virtuous mix of rational choice, institutionalism and neo-Marxism theories. Levi explains the interaction among State, actors and citizens that has preferences and strategic capacity to maximize objectives. With the historical examples worked by Levi, I notice the possibility to analyze the relationships among the Brazilian State, business associations and unions face the politics of neoliberal reforms recently applied by the brazilian government. "As specialization and division of labor increase, there is greater demand on the state to provide collective goods where once there were solely private goods or no goods at all."

From the second sentence of this book, it charts its course in oblivious contradiction of reality. In reality, of course, economic activity individuates and privatizes as society develops. The few exceptions, e.g., the Soviet Union, are typically short-lived and embarrassing to their promoters.

Ms. Levi is obviously a clever person, but sadly, as with many clever people in academia, her intelligence in this book is deployed mainly to play games of self-referential abstraction.

This book's obscurity and practical uselessness mean that it is unlikely to be of any consequence. There probably is a good book to be written on a general theory of comparative taxation, but this ain't it.

Good overview of sexual orientation ration, gender identity, and LGBT issues facing higher education learning and student services. I wish the authors dived more into intersectionality or an overview/comparison of serves LGBT student services provide, but this journal issue is a good start for people who are interested in LGBT higher education services.

Prepare to be surprised!

As a boy this was one of my very favorite books. I remember crawling into the nice warm space between the pot bellied stove and the wall on cold wintry Michigan days. I'd escape into a wonderful world of heroes, giants and angry Gods who all vied with each other in epic struggle. What a great tale! Men who cleverly outwitted foes of great strength and supernatural powers to accomplish their ultimate wish...to return home with honor. I seldom spoke to others of this tale, because I was so self conscious that I probably did not know how to pronounce so many of the names. Now along comes a version that has such great illustrations that one wonders how it can be offered at this price. Many "Art" books costing multiples of Amazon's price are not nearly so nice. My wife (who is a graphic artist in her own right) saw the first copy I bought and urged me to buy more copies for all the grand kids, which I did. I expected it to be nice and was really surprised at how much it exceeded my expectations!
Highly recommended to folks who love a great adventure that has endured through centuries and especially to those who love great illustration.

What is Poseidon up to, and what happens when Odysseus must deal with deadly sirens? As Odysseus struggles to make it home, while fighting his own battles, Penelope must challenge an invasion of her palace. What do the greedy men want, and will she be forced into choosing a new husband? Will Odysseus be able to rescue his wife, and who will survive? Who told Penelope that her husband is dead, and does she believe it? This fun-filled story is exciting, and fascinating from beginning to end. Highly Recommended to young readers, ages 8 and up. The author paints mystical-magic throughout, the illustrations are stunning, and fans of mythology will enjoy as this book entertains from beginning to end!

Awesome classic for young readers/listeners

I actually found this book at my local public library. I Love the Odyssey and wanted to share it with my kids (6 & 8 years) in a format that is suitable for younger readers. We've been reading this book every night. They beg me not to stop reading. They are loving it. The author retells the story in a way that enraptures my sons' imaginations. Even my husband wants to sit in the room and listen. It's great to have a young readers' version of this book that sparks their curiosity and attention. Someday, when this story is assigned to them in high school and beyond, they will have an understanding of the plot and characters. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves Greek classics and wants to expose a child to this epic story.

Gr3-5 Jo-Jo, a donkey in 16th-Cen tury Venice, is bullied by a cruel mas ter and belittled by the elegant people who laugh at him as he stands beneath handsome golden horses. It is only when the Doge's daughter takes one of his melons and pats his head that the snobbish people will buy. The story combines aspects of The Ugly Duck ling, Cinderella, and The Little Hero of Haarlem. First the little donkey, who so wishes for more than his hum ble station in life, is championed by the daughter of the Doge, and then he saves the people of Venice by braying loudly enough to warn them that the sea is coming in. The writing style fol lows that of the literary fairy tale, be ing at once simple and elegant. The il lustrations fit the story perfectly. Vivid colors (mostly watercolors) fol low the rich palette of Venetian paint ers of the era, with bright golds, reds, and greens that seem to reflect the strong light of the Mediterranean. Bhaskara is in the direct lineage of Vasugupta. To Bhaskara's commentary, Mark Dyczkowski has added his translation of an anonymous commentary as an aid to understanding Bhaskara's interpretation. This anonymous writer also serves as a bridge between Ksemaraja's and Bhaskara's commentaries, drawing from both. The commentary on each sutra is thus in three layers. Bhaskara's commentary is first, followed by the anonymous commentary, after which Dyczkowski adds his own exposition and compares Bhaskara and Ksemaraja.
Ksemaraja's commentary, the Vimarsini, has been translated by Jaideva Singh and published by SUNY Press under the title Siva Sutra.

Mark S. G. Dyczkowski took his first degree at Banaras Hindu University and then his doctorate at Oxford. He is presently associated with Sampurnananda Sanskrit University in Varanasi. He is the author of The Doctrine of Vibration: An Analysis of the Doctrines and Practices of Kashmir Shaivism; The Canon of the Saivagama and the Kubjika: Tantras of the Western Kaula Tradition; and The Stanzas on Vibration: The Spanda Karika with Four Commentaries.

Great Translation and Commentary

The philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism was born in the 9th century when Lord Shiva revealed the 77 aphorisms which have come to constitute the Shiva Sutras to the sage, Vasugupta in a dream. Sri Vasugupta was then instructed to seek out a specific rock on Mahadev Mountain. When Vasugupta struck the rock, it is said to have turned over, revealing the Shiva Sutras inscribed upon the rock. The rock, called Shankaropala, is still located at the original site, although the aphorisms can no longer be found inscribed there.

The book "Aphorisms of Shiva" by Mark Dyczkowski is a translation of the Shiva Sutras with a commentary from Bhaskara, an early sage of Kashmir Shaivism hailing from the lineage of Sage Vasugupta himself. It also features another anonymous commentary. Many generations removed from Vasugupta, a brilliant Master from this same lineage, named Abhinivagupta, wrote the master work of Kashmir Shaivism, the Tantraloka. In a monumental feat of scholarship and penetrating insight, Abhinavagupta rendered the works of these early proponents of Kashmir Shaivism into a cohesive whole which included all the eminent Tantric traditions of the time and region. Abhinava's foremost disciple, Kshemaraja went on to write a commentary on the Shiva Sutras, following the inclusive style of his Guru, that has been widely translated in our own era. In his "Aphorisms of Shiva", Professor Dyczkowski additionally compares the commentary representative of the early stream of Kashmiri Shaivite teaching to that of the later "Trika" system first expounded by Abhinava and furthered by Kshemaraja.

While it isn't the most easily-understood of philosophical pursuits, it's depth is immeasurable and its rewards are bountiful. Studied diligently, especially in conjunction with a spiritual practice and under the direction of a teacher who can help illumine the experience which the tradition points to, the "Shiva Sutras" can help uncover the most vast of treasures. If this path calls to you, I encourage the study of Professor Dyczkowski's "Aphorisms" in particular.

Bhaskara's commentary is enlightening! Sadaa"saya Mark Dyczkowski's presentation is superb. If you are interested in Kashmir Shaivism, this book is a must have. Very inspiring. Thanks for another brilliant work, Mark!

This saved my grade from the doom of a horrible professor. The answers are derived step-by-step, but note that there is not a great deal of written explanation. Also note that the questions themselves are not written; you need the textbook to know what they are.

The artistic vision of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Running Fence was 18 feet high and traversed the private properties of 59 ranchers. Although it remained in place for just two weeks, the process of planning it consumed nearly four years, and the installation required helicopters, barges, lawyers, and more than 300 Bay Area students and workers. This beautiful book, companion volume to the exhibition of the same name, tells the story of this legendary art installation. Illustrated throughout with graphic representations and stunning photographs, Christo and Jeanne-Claude recounts how two artists who were complete strangers to the area gradually enlisted the support of entire communities in order to make their vision a reality. Brian O'Doherty's insightful essay considers the legacy of the Running Fence, while remembrances from other contributors, including the artists' California attorney provide as full an experience of Running Fence as is possible, short of actually having been there.

super-high highs

I rate this book 5 stars not because it's perfect, but because I love it. I would give a 5-star rating to any book that contained either "The Kidney-Shaped Stone That Moves Every Day," "A Shinagawa Monkey," OR "Where I'm Likely to Find It" - and this one has all 3! Frankly even the less-than-perfect stories (e.g. "Sharpie Cakes") are, to me, both endearing and interesting. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a huge, huge Murakami fan and would read anything he wrote, even a grocery list. In fact sometimes his novels actually include grocery lists, and I read them with great enjoyment.

Hanalei Bay on Kindle

This is my first purchase on Kindle for PC. I bought it because I heard about the short story, Hanalei Bay, a beautiful place on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Kauai, which I visited about a year ago. The story is part of this collection.

In another review, I described Hanalei Bay as a haunting short story about a Japanese woman who arrives in Kauai after her son dies while surfing and who returns each year to sit on the beach and sometimes play the piano in Hanalei. A ghost appears for the briefest of moments in the story, but only to two surfers who hitchhiked to Hanalei. More haunting to me still is the vision that suggests that the paradise I visited may be pierced to reveal shark attacks and drownings and worse, maybe, all of which is hard to imagine sitting on its beaches looking out at the water and the sky. The style might be called haunting, too, if it weren't so clean. This was a find.

As for the Kindle for PC form, I was satisfied with the purchase. The quality is good, the price is good. I suspect the original publication in book form was automatically re-formatted to fit the PC screen. It felt strange to have no page numbers, and there were page breaks no printer would have allowed ("widows and orphans").

Vintage Murakami

I should preface this by saying that I have been a huge Murakami fan for years, although I had never gotten around to reading this particular book. Anyway, I was very predisposed toward liking it a lot when I picked it up and was not disappointed. I have to admit that there are one or two stories that struck me as being kind of goofy, with no particular point that I could discern (The Rise and Fall of Sharpie Cakes being perhaps the most egregious example). But the majority of the stories are vintage Murakami - engaging, mysterious, surreal yet written in an almost matter-of-fact voice.

The stories are ordered chronologically, which adds additional interest. The reader gets to trace the development of Murakami's style over the years, and while I felt the best stories come toward the end of the book (the last six stories go by in a blur they are so good), the early stories are great as well.

Very highly recommended.
