Professional Rivalry gone wild!

If you are expecting to learn about digs and dinosaurs, you may be surprised by this book. Although this is a good history of American digs and findings, the author focuses more on the paleontologists and explorers than on the prehistoric things they found.

If you thrive on stories about business psychology, office politics, and cranky Victorian-era paleontologists, this may be your cup of tea. The search for fossils and dinosaur bones led Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh west to dig the prehistoric bone beds of Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Their contributions to science and the field of paleontology were massive, and laid the groundwork for modern studies and superb museum and academic collections.

This is not an adventure story. It is the story of the network of Gilded-Age paleontologists, with an emphasis on the rivalry between Cope (of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia) and Marsh (of the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale).

The book may inspire you to look for the the serious-minded A&E documentary, "Dinosaur Wars," on the same topic.

As has been pointed out, this book is not so much about now-extinct mammals and dinosaurs in the American West as about the men of the 19th century, especially rivals O.C. Marsh and Edward D Cope, who discovered and classified them. However, it should be noted that the book was written in 1973. Which accounts in part for its low resolution B&W photos. More importantly, it reflects the thinking toward dinosaurs prior to the so-called "dinosaur renaissance" that has taken place in the last four decades.

Unrecorded millions, paid out for unknown reasons, raised the Westchester's construction total to a breathtaking $2 million a mile, almost $40 million a mile in 2005 dollars. Yet this railroad, designed to carry more than 100,000 people a day efficiently and comfortably, ran through virtually undeveloped territory and duplicated the line of the parent company that built it. Due to woeful financial performances and failure to show a profit, the Westchester trains stopped running within 25 years of their christening.

Good history, great business analysis

Good read about construction of a commuter rail line through southern Westchester County, NY. Its excellent historical references and good writing should make this interesting for non-railfans. Harwood's strength is his insightful business analysis of why and how this very expensive line got built and then abandoned. Reads like a good mystery novel in parts, with Harwood zooming back from fascinating minutiae about routing choices to J.P. Morgan's strategic -- but not entirely clear -- plans for his railroad investments. Fun to read.

Coming up on 100th Aniversary of its opening, and having explored some of the abandoned ROW / stations back in the 1970's, I wanted to learn about this railroad. Excellent written book going over the dubious payments and "strange" decisions made that doomed this endeavor before it started. Would have liked to see more of the construction photos and any taken during the scrapping, but there are other books dedicated to that.

This book takes a provocative look at the early 1970s - an often overlooked yet colorful period when the Vietnam War and student protests were on the wane as new religious groups grew in size and visibility. Certainly, religious strains were evident through postwar popular culture from the 1950s Beat generation into the 1960s drug counterculture, but the explosion of nontraditional religions during the early 1970s was unprecedented. This phenomenon took place in the United States (and at the edges of American-influenced Canadian society) among young people who had been committed to bringing about what they called the revolution but were converting to a wide variety of Eastern and Western mystical and spiritual movements. Stephen Kent maintains that the failure of political activism led former radicals to become involved with groups such as the Hare Krishnas, Scientology, Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church, the Jesus movement, and the Children of God. Drawing on scholarly literature, alternative press reportage, and personal narratives, Kent shows how numerous activists turned from psychedelia and political activism to guru worship and spiritual quest as a response to the failure

In this lucid and economical study, sociologist Kent examines a little-noted confluence: the same years that saw American youth delving into radical politics and protesting war also saw them turn to unusual, sometimes cultish, spiritual traditions. Kent challenges traditional scholarship by arguing that such conversions to alternative religious traditions marked "a crisis of means," not a "a crisis of meaning," as has often been assumed. Political activism, says Kent, was meant to accomplish something: above all, to end the Vietnam War. When it became increasingly apparent that countercultural politics were not, in fact, achieving the desired ends, activists discovered other methods in new religious groups. That a disaffected generation should turn to spirituality is not surprising; that it should do so for political reasons is indeed interesting. Just as useful as Kent's provocative (if overly functionalist) argument is his descriptive ethnography of many of the religious paths that became prominent during the 1970s the Hare Krishnas, Transcendental Meditation, Scientology, the Unification Church and the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization. This book's import goes far beyond the seemingly narrow scope of its subject; when coupled with the recent work of Christian Smith (Divided by Faith and Disruptive Religion), Kent's study promises to reshape and reinvigorate the very language we use to discuss the nexus between religion and politics in America.

Books on countercultural religion in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s are just now being published. Here, Kent (sociology, Univ. of Alberta, Canada) analyzes the religious movements that took root among young people in the United States toward the end of the Vietnam War era. He traces the cultural changes some U.S. youth experienced as they moved from the political protests of the Sixties to mystical religious conversions in the early Seventies. The book provides a catalog of religious options that were pursued by those who had been dedicated to "the revolution," all of which fall into the categories of the cultic, occult, or Eastern religions. A section on psychedelic drug-enhanced religious experiences typifies the type of material covered in this study. Kent admits that a shift to religion was not the only transition possible some instead chose the women's movement, gay rights, ecology, rural living, and other social movements. And he recognizes that not everyone will agree that the transition to religion was a good one. The catalog of persons and experiences documented here will not be familiar to many historians, and much of it will fall outside the realm of study for religious scholars. Nevertheless, this study, which utilizes sources such as personal narratives and the alternative press, is recommended for academic and public libraries. James A. This socio-historical account is thorough in demonstrating its thesis that it was somewhat of a seamless transition from political activism to religious conversion with the consistent goal of second order cultural change. One thing that the book misses is how the idealism of those interviewed faced such things as the childhood sexual abuse scandals of groups like COG.

About the Author

Professor Sam Zhang Shanyong, better known as Sam Zhang, is a tenured full professor at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Professor Zhang serves as editor-in-chief for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Letters (USA) and principal editor for the Journal of Materials Research (USA). He has worked on processing and characterization of nanocomposite thin films and coatings for 20 years and has authored/co-authored more than 260 peer-reviewed international journal papers with an average of more than 12 citations per paper, 7 books, 20 book chapters, and guest-edited more than 20 journal volumes. His book on Materials Characterization Techniques has been adopted as a textbook by one European and eight American universities. The book was also translated into Chinese, published by China Scientific Press, and was used as textbook in many Chinese universities.

Professor Dongliang Zhao is the chief engineer at Central Iron and Steel Research Institute (CISRI, Beijing, China) since 2009 and the director of CISRI’s Institute of Functional Materials. CISRI plays a leading role in China’s R&D in superalloys. Professor Zhao’s research interests include computational material science, magnetic materials, energy materials, and superalloys. He has been the leading principal investigator of or participated in more than 20 Chinese national research projects. Professor Zhao has published 40 journal papers and was granted six patents. In 2003, Professor Zhao was conferred the title of "Beijing Outstanding Young Engineer" by Beijing City Government. In 2006, he was recognized by the State Department as one of the National Star Researchers and in 2008, he was conferred the title of "National Defense Science and Technology Innovation leader."
