Conveying the excitement and allure of physics, this progressive text uses a computational approach to introduce students to the basic numerical techniques used in dealing with topics and problems of prime interest to today's physicists.

About the Author

Nicholas Giordano obtained his B.S. at Purdue University and his Ph.D. at Yale University. He has been on the faculty at Purdue since 1979, served as an Assistant Dean of Science from 2000-2003, and is currently the Hubert James Distinguished Professor of Physics. His research interests include electrical conduction, superconductivity, and magnetism in ultra-small metallic structures, along with musical acoustics and the physics of the piano. Ideas for this book grew out of the course on computational physics that he developed and taught in the early 1990s. Professor Giordano earned a Computational Science Education Award from the Department of Energy in 1997, and in 2004 was named Indiana Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.

Hisao Nakanishi earned his B.S. from Brown University and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. His Ph.D. research concerned scaling and universality in a geometric phase transition called percolation and he has been interested in scale-invariance ever since. During his first postdoctoral work at Cornell he was introduced to the problem of surface critical phenomena such as wetting phase transitions, and later at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he started working on the statistics of diffusion and polymers in earnest. .In 1992 Professor Nakanishi was a part of the team that won a Gordon Bell Prize for the application of parallel computing to a problem in polymer statistics. More recently he has also put on another hat as a developer of a computer-based interactive exercise system which is used by a few thousand students at Purdue each year.

A great way to learn the material.

Let me begin by saying that I have read through many books on computational physics and this is by far the one that I prefer. It seems suitable for use in a classroom or for self study. The writing style is clear, almost conversational and new concepts are developed carefully and can be easily understood.

The unfortunate part of the book is of course the use of Basic for the examples. I agree with the author that this language, and especially the version used, is suitable and even easy to use for the subject at hand, however it is not an industry standard language.

I would much rather see C, C++ or even Python used for the examples. It is not hard to translate from the Basic versions, but many readers of this book will be scientists, but not generally computer scientists. And they may be learning to program as they are using this book. If the examples were written using basic C syntax, the reader would be well on his way to learning not only computational physics, but a widely used language as well.

With this light criticism, I really like the book and have not found anything that I would prefer regardless of the programming language used.

great book for learning a model by simulations

I'm glad I bought this book. I was hesitant at first, while perusing it in the bookstore, because it seemed to be aimed at an audience that is, well, too undergraduate. However the book gets directly to the essence of the algorithms used to carry out simulations: nothing extraneous. Within an hour after sitting down to read a chapter, one can often have the first working code finished. It is through trying simulations, playing with parameters, and seeing what happens that one starts to get a feel for the models which are otherwise just differential equations on paper. The style of exposition is informal and lively. The range of subjects covered is diverse. It presumes the reader is familiar with physics of the models discussed, yet each chapter begins with a short review. The book is organized in a way that permits skipping around, which I like, and I found that the exercises are packed with suggestions and new things to try. All in all it is a very good book for someone who may know next to nothing about a particular physics model and wants to learn it though computer simulation.

As you follow the short chapters, different project management issues are covered practically and comprehensively. Although the book was written a while ago it is no less relevant. Arguably the most readable Project Management book and I have read Critical Chain !

Amazing, just like the original Sherlock Holmes stories.

This is the second book by Copland that I've read, and I absolutely adored it. It was full of extremely well-placed twists and turns, and so suspenseful that I was turning pages as quickly as I could just to discover what would happen next. As soon as I thought that I had figured the mystery out or had put the pieces together, something new would happen and I would realize that I was completely off. The storyline was brilliant. What do the unique belt of a murdered American Indian and Her Majesty the Queen have in common? Sherlock Holmes, of course. A gorgeous, handcrafted silver with turquoise stones man's belt and buckle turn up in Hyde Park, so a street urchin brings it to Sherlock, hoping for a reward. However, the maker and wearer of the belt and buckle shows up dead in a hotel room, and Scotland Yard calls upon Sherlock. Sherlock finds a secret key to a replica of the Crown Jewels, and the real Jewels are in danger. And there, the craziness begins. The Queen's Diamond Jubilee could be ruined, so Sherlock, Watson, and even Her Majesty team up to set everything right. This novel is full of suspense and on-the-edge-of-your-seat action from beginning to end, and I loved every minute of it.

Author Craig Stephen Copland leads us down the path of deductive reasoning via Sherlock Holmes, and what we wind up with is another brilliantly solved murder case. His loyal sidekick, Dr. John Watson is the narrator as always, and Mr. Copland continues the classic feel of the original mysteries in his pastiche series.

Great read and fun story!

I was lucky enough to be able to read this over the fast few days. It definitely reminded me the most of the old Sherlock Holmes stories. This was fun to read as I found myself trying to pick up on clues and solve the mystery myself throughout the reading. Although I'd think I was correct, I would get thrown off and didn't quite solve it on my own. All the characters worked well together and this was another story I found that kept me on the edge of my seat. I like that the story was based in London as well. Scotland and Holmes worked well together cracking the case.

This is the overview book you need.

This book is a rare find. It gives a comprehensive--but not sketchy--history of the Baltic States from their inception as territories of other powers through to their independence. I was impressed by how quickly I read through it without having to continuously look back to see what I'd forgotten. Each chapter leads logically from the previous. NO CONFUSION!! How's that for a find?
Anyone who wants to add the Baltic Region to their knowledge of history (medieval through modern) needs this book.

This was the best history of the Baltic States I have ever read. The author does an amazing job of covering the history of the Baltics in detail while still making it interesting. If you are looking for a great history of the Baltic States then this is the book for you.

A great book to begin a Baltic journey

Despite being under-200-pages, this is a rather thorough book to read before embarking on a larger journey either through a history of one of the Baltic states or any given historical era of the Baltic region. The author doesn't linger too long over the Iron Age and prehistoric societies, but goes almost straight to illustrate the Northern Crusades. Every chapter begins with a short summary. Thus, the book is easily navigable if, for example, you wish to focus more on the history of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, rather than the time of the three Baltic states under Soviet rule. By the middle of the book you will have reached the wars of Baltic independence fought at the beginning of the 20th century. Hence, one could say that modern history of the Baltic region here is covered more extensively, than other historical time periods.

If one day travelling through the Baltic states you cross Latvian-Lithuanian border, then take a note that you cross the line, which in 1290 roughly corresponded a military frontline between pagans and Christians. The author has made a good effort to show that the Baltic region has never been quite homogenious and divergences in historical perspective of all three countries are obvious. The list of the sources for further reading at the end of the book is extensive, whichever of the countries and events you would prefer to explore any deeper.

A book as well constructed as the stunning houses it describes

What a beautiful and informative book! It's a delight to dip in and out of, but reading from cover to cover gives real insight into both the traditions of Japanese architecture and the principles of eco living. The floor plans and cross-sections for each of the crisply described houses allow the reader to see the exquisitely photographed rooms and features as parts of a whole. The end-of-chapter pages on key terms such as engawa and passive qualities then explain the ideas that underpin the projects. Four chapters on exemplary Japanese houses are given relevance to Western readers by the closing chapter which shows their influence on work in Toronto, Norway, Scotland and Prague.
