Raymond B. Landis is Dean Emeritus at California State University, Los Angeles. Dr. Landis is recognized as the "father" of Minority Engineering Programs in the U.S. His "community building/collaborative learning" MEP model has been widely replicated at universities all across the nation. His experience in teaching Introduction to Engineering courses, the cornerstone of that model, led him to write Studying Engineering.

Motivation and strategy for educational success

I just got this book yesterday, and while I'm only halfway through it, it has inspired me to have a high level of success in my engineering education. It's not really a book about how to engineer anything specifically, but it does describe the engineering process, gives in-depth info on many different branches of engineering, describes the rewards of a career in engineering, and in my opinion, most importantly, it convinces you that if you can pass Calculus I at the University level, you can graduate with a B.S. in Engineering. It's just a long series of small steps.

As a 31 year old former college dropout and now Freshman Engineering student, I wish I had read this book the first time I went to College. But I'm glad I read it now. I'm going to OWN this Engineering program.

terrible--psuedopsychology
doesn't have ANYTHING to do with engineering. Reads like a s***ty self-help book.
All about some fat scum bag's recipe for "sucess"--and scaring kids into thinking they'll fail without complicated and creepy formulas for doing so.
Really, really awful.
Seemingly complicates college--which is pretty simple--go to class--sit in the front--take notes--write the papers--review for tests--and take such tests. easy--and the skill i need--rebuff creepers who try to be "homies" or even try to date you.

A disturbing and failed attempt at a difficult topic

A friend recommended this book after hearing a promotion for it on the radio. She said it was a useful way to broach the sensitive topic of molestation with your young ones. The book, however, is neither useful as a conversation tool with toddlers, nor is it well-written. This book will traumatize your children and unnecessarily demonize the men in their lives who could actually help them. You don't have to traumatize your children in order to protect them. Do not buy this book. Explain to your toddlers, boys and girls, that their privates are to be touched by no one, then parent your children as vehemently as any human being can.

The author really got it wrong here.

Tomatos are NOT in season!

Finally a book that makes it easy to talk about an extremely delicate subject to a very young girl. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and the language can draw in a child. This should be in every early childhood school, every day care operation and every home where young girls reside. Protect our girls! Help them define appropriate boundaries. Forewarn, pre-arm and disseminate appropriate information.

A Courageous Tour de Force re child sexual molestation

This is a toughie!! From the point of view of an academic and counsellor there are all kinds of debates as to the wisdom of using a metaphor for the vagina when trying to teach your kids about this sadly rampant issue in Jamaica and the world. This comes from the gut though...and the reason I say so ....is the page on smell...no doubt about it...smell is the sense that most deeply embeds memory...I know that I use mine to detect whether there is a brigand lurking around in the dark...for a kid it's no different... a brave effort...out of the closet in fabulous colour...as always with this kind of book...you do not just let the child read it...you sit with him/her and explain everything in detail in an age appropriate way and this book is then stored in a special place not just left about ...I can see the disquiet of the the 'one star reviewer'...there are pictures of the classic 'dark man' of the universal human psyche...but that's what it is...I know this 'man' well in my own dreams. And a suggestion - It might be helpful in the next edition to shade in the illustration to a couple of tones darker around the little cartoon limbs when they are superimposed over the body of the tomato to give it higher definition re what is 'limb' and what is 'trunk'.
Whew, something has come up from the sewar here, been put in the light and conceptualised in such friendly colour that it took a special mind to do this...& Rorie can illustrate boy!!!! If this book does nothing else it blesses by stirring what is persistently shoved under the carpet in a disgraceful way at all levels of society, in all cultures around the world...

About the Author
John I. Ingle, DDS, is a pioneer in the field of endodontics and has served as an educator and mentor to generations of endodontists. Now retired, he has been an international lecturer, professor and department chair of periodontics and endodontics at the University of Washington, Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, and he also served the Institute of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He was president of Palm Springs Seminars, a leading institutions of dental continuing education.

Dr. Ingle is also a past President of the American Association of Endodontists, and the AAE awarded him the Ralph F. Sommer Award and the Edgar D. Coolidge Award. In 2001 he was inducted into the USC School of Dentistry s Hall of Fame.

Ilan Rotstein, DDS, is Associate Dean of Continuing Education at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, where he also serves as Chair of the Division of Endodontics, Orthodontics and General Practice Residency.

About the Author

Beverly Otto, Ph.D., an early childhood educator for over 25 years, is a professor in the Teacher Education Department at Northeastern Illinois University.� She earned her doctorate at Northwestern University in Teaching and Learning Processes with a focus on emergent literacy.� Dr. Otto teaches courses in language and literacy development for preservice and inservice teachers, along with research for classroom teachers. She also serves as advisor for the MAT: Language Arts-Elementary Education and MSI: Language Arts-Elementary programs.� Her major professional goal is preparing teachers to support children’s life-long learning through language and literacy development. Dr. Otto has also served as department chair as well as associate dean in the College of Education.

�� Dr. Otto is the author of Language Development in Early Childhood, 2nd edition (Merrill/Prentice Hall), and has also authored articles published in international, national and state professional journals.� Her field-based research on emergent literacy has been presented at international, national, state, and local conferences. About the Author
ERIC ARTHUR BLAIR (19031950), better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English author and journalist whose best-known works include the dystopian novel 1984 and the satirical novella Animal Farm. He is consistently ranked among the best English writers of the 20th century, and his writing has had a huge, lasting influence on contemporary culture. Several of his coined words have since entered the English language, and the word "Orwellian" is now used to describe totalitarian or authoritarian social practices.

From a very early age, perhaps the age of five or six, I knew that when I grew up I should be a writer. Between the ages of about seventeen and twenty-four I tried to abandon this idea, but I did so with the consciousness that I was outraging my true nature and that sooner or later I should have to settle down and write books.

I was the middle child of three, but there was a gap of five years on either side, and I barely saw my father before I was eight. For this and other reasons I was somewhat lonely, and I soon developed disagreeable mannerisms which made me unpopular throughout my schooldays. I had the lonely child's habit of making up stories and holding conversations with imaginary persons, and I think from the very start my literary ambitions were mixed up with the feeling of being isolated and undervalued. I knew that I had a facility with words and a power of facing unpleasant facts, and I felt that this created a sort of private world in which I could get my own back for my failure in everyday life. Nevertheless the volume of serious - i.e. seriously intended - writing which I produced all through my childhood and boyhood would not amount to half a dozen pages. I wrote my first poem at the age of four or five, my mother taking it down to dictation.

Great short collection of essays

Why I Write is a collection of four pieces by one of the best writers of the twentieth century. George Orwell is best known for his political fables Animal Farm and 1984, but was also a prolific essayist and author of numerous short stories, many of them based on his own experiences in British-controlled Burma. This books includes three essays--"Why I Write", "The Lion and the Unicorn", and "Politics and the English Language"--and the short story "A Hanging."

"Why I Write" offers the reader a look into one great writer's motivations for writing, as Orwell lays out the only real reasons anyone writes. "The Lion and the Unicorn" is fascinating, not only for its often humorous descriptions of the British national character, but for the political ideas expressed in it and the knowledge, made clear by Orwell at the beginning, that this was written in the midst of the Blitz. "Politics and the English Language" is a brief guide to the fatal flaws of modern writing--all of which have lasted beyond Orwell--and how to mend them. "A Hanging" is reminiscent of another of Orwell's famous short stories, "Shooting the Elephant," as it describes an otherwise mundane action in ominous, metaphoric terms.

While hardly exhaustive, this collection of Orwell's essays is a good introduction to Orwell, his writings, and his political views. Makes very good reading for a trip, which is where I read it.

Question is: Why Should I Buy this particular "Why I write?" Compilation?

In evaluating "Why I write?," I am not evaluating Orwell: he is - in my opinion - beyond evaluation. Brilliant, unorthodox, humanistically transparent - he is a model of existential integrity. In evaluating "Why I write?" I am offering an evaluation of this particular compilation of essays. I am trying to answer the question of "Why should I buy the 'Why I write?'"

This particular compilation of Orwell's essays consists of "Why I write?," The Lion and the Unicorn," "A Hanging," and "Politics and the English Language." As you might have already gleaned from you search, the books of Orwell's essays are all over the market place. This one - consisting of four iconic essays - is a great primer.

The "Why I write?" humbles with introspection and humanistic self-acceptance. "The Lion and the Unicorn" showcases Orwell's keen journalism and the capacity to be on the outside of the phenomenon in question, even when that phenomenon is his own culture. "A Hanging" is a normalizing glimpse into how we deal with our own mortality superimposed onto a social statement against capital punishment. And the "Politics and the English Language" is a brilliant examination of the human consciousness, a study of the interplay of thought and language, an anti-dote to propoganda, a treasure trove of linguistic hypotheses, and, if nothing else, a useful commentary on the rationale behind the "1984" Newspeak and Doublethink.

As such, this particular collection of Orwell's essays reveals the breadth of his thematic spectrum - without the biographical weight of more exhaustive essay compilations.

Don't buy the Kindle version by Crabbit House

Well, there was Our Man eager to read the four essays that are mentioned in the product description. But lo and behold when you buy the Kindle edition by Crabbit House for a steal at under $2.00, it only includes the one 15-screen essay, Why I Write, which is freely available on Google. The other three essays, that are in the description, are not included in the collection. A steal all right, but not the good kind.
