PHILIPPA X. GIRLING has nineteen years of experience in the global securities industry, working in the fields of operational risk, training, project management, and organizational change. She currently serves as Business Chief Risk Officer for Capital One Commercial Bank. Over her career, Girling has held several operational risk leadership roles, including heading the global corporate operational risk functions at Morgan Stanley and Nomura. Most recently, she has focused on operational risk training, teaching in the operational risk executive education program at Columbia University, and leading operational risk education sessions for the London Business School, Rutgers University, and Carnegie Mellon. Having established a global reputation as an operational risk expert, Girling was selected as one of the "top 50 faces of operational risk" by Operational Risk and Regulation magazine. She holds an English law degree from the University of East Anglia, England, and is a member of the New York State Bar Association. She is a holder of the GARP Financial Risk Manager accreditation and is a doctoral candidate at Rutgers University.

The Definitive Guide

I've been an operational risk professional for more than a decade. I've been in op risk, business continuity, IT risk, and Compliance roles and there are entry level subject area specific training and lesson material for all of those except op risk, which is the discipline that ties everything together. In today's financial services business (and, I would suppose other all other industries, but I'm in finance), the pressures to reduce risk and to provide reliable mechanisms for reporting and identifying areas of risk are only increasing. If you are in the finance industry, regulators are expecting you to know the concepts in this book: RCSA, policy and procedure management, Basel accords, issue management, etc. This is the best overview guide I have seen, and it works well for new hires, executives unfamiliar with op risk concepts, and for management in companies where regulatory pressure is increasing.

On the whole, ORM is a comprehensive and well-documented guide to understand how operational risk has emerged as a common thread in enterprise wide risk management today. It discusses the critical elements needed for operational risk frameworks in the current markets, and should be a valuable reference for professionals within risk disciplines, but also for those in Compliance, Audit, Ops, Legal, and even the Board of Directors. Also likely to benefit are students and those looking to understand the relationships between some of the risk events that shaped our recent history. It has numerous examples of sample frameworks and pointed out how organizations are now driven by an evolving regulatory landscape.
At the end of the day, operational risk is a proprietary endeavor for any organization, but the author seemed to take the approach to provide education, practical examples and ideas to promote discussion and stimulate a new set of industry best practices.

Robert E. Owens, Jr. Ph.D. (“Dr. Bob”) is an associate professor at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY and a New York State Distinguished Teaching Professor. He teaches courses in language development and language disorders and is the author of Language Development, An Introduction (8 editions); Language Disorders, A Functional Approach (6 editions) Program for the Acquisition of Language with the Severely Impaired (PALS); Help Your Baby Talk, Introducing the New Shared Communication Method and Queer Kids, The Challenge & Promise for Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual Youth. His Language Development text is the most widely used in the world and has been translated into Spanish, Korean, and Arabic. He has also co-authored Introduction to Communication Disorders, A Life Span Perspective (5 editions), which has been translated into Mandarin and Korean, written a score of book chapters and professional articles, and authored two as-yet unpublished novels which are sure to win a posthumous Pulitzer prize. Currently, he is authoring a text on early intervention. In love with the sound of his own voice, Dr. Bob has presented over 190 professional papers and workshops around the globe. Great textbook, but a lot to digest, which speaks to the content, (it's dense!) not the author of the text.

This book is dense. It covers a LOT. I hope you have a great professor, like I did. But... Rating the book poorly means that you aren't a serious student. This isn't an entry level book; it's an intro course for juniors and seniors who know their major. I have worked with children for many years, and as a returning student on the SLP track, I wish I had purchased this book instead of renting it. It's well written, informative and DENSE. Be ready to work hard; this information is hard won, but worth it!

About the Author
Rosemarie Smead, Ph.D., is Distinguished Teaching and Service Professor at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany. She has presented workshops and seminars both nationally and internationally. Dr. Smead is past president and fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. She has received state, ASGW, and university awards for her distinguished teaching and service to the profession.

The book is okay....

This was required by a class and much of what is contained within this book is "common sense" counseling. The methods described are good and can be helpful. However some of Smead's work is an attempt at reinventing the wheel again. For example, groups typically form,storm,norm, preform and then adjourn. Smead in her attempt to be different came up with different names for each stage and added a unneeded pre-group stage. So the book is good for beginning counselors or those who are really new to working with/engaging groups.

I had this book as a text in my school counseling program. While there is no substitute for practical experience, I had confidence after reading this book that I knew what I was doing. Lots of helpful techniques.

hey, we had to buy this for class. would i buy it normally, no way! but one must do, what one has to do. it is fair (a little bit grandiose in expectation, and boundaries) regarding the differential between school and professional arena, still, a decent read.
