A comprehensive and entertaining companion to the films!

What an incredible book! At 192 pages, this fantastic work by Gary Russell is chock-full of pictures, sketches, drawings and paintings from the wonderful film �The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Rings.� I have purchased all of the movie tie-in books available and this is by far my favorite. If you are into visuals (and I am), I couldn�t recommend this book enough. The back of the book says �contains 500 exclusive paintings and drawings from the spectacular film" and they weren't kidding!
The book is divided into 4 chapters - Locations, Costumes, Armory and Creatures. The LOCATIONS chapter is by far the largest - with extensive coverage of Bag End and Hobbiton, Bree, Weathertop, Ford of Bruinen, Rivendell, Moria, Isengard, Lothlorien, the River Anduin, Mordor and Amon Hen. One of my favorites is the sketch of the Bag End floor plan (with its pantries and cellars that we don�t get to see in the film). There are also sketches of the interior of the Green Dragon Inn (which we never saw on the film but which will hopefully make an appearance on the Special Extended Edition VHS/DVD to be released in November). The COSTUMES chapter shows the various design sketches by Ngila Dickson and Sylvana Sacco. All the main characters (from Frodo to Galadriel to Sauron - as well Gandalf�s pipes!) are featured. Costume designer Ngila Dickson also gives snippets on the influences of the costumes as well as the reasons why certain design themes were chosen (e.g. Boromir�s Gondorian costume is drawn from Byzantine influences and how Legolas� costume was the most difficult to design). The ARMORY section shows all the various swords, daggers, insignias, shields, etc. carried by the characters. Included are Frodo�s mithril shirt and the various armor as worn by Elendil, Elrond and GilGalad in the Prologue. The final chapter, and not the least interesting, is the CREATURES section with its sketches, maquettes, paintings and screenshots of Orcs, Urukhai, the Cave Troll, the Ringwraiths, the Watcher of the Water and the spectacular Balrog. One of the most interesting are the various versions of the Balrog (from more human-like to reptilian to the final version with wings).
What�s wonderful about this book is that it really gives you the essence of the monumental task of bringing the films to life. So many talented individuals collaborated to breath life into Professor Tolkien�s Middle Earth. Mind you, this book isn�t all visuals: each picture is accompanied by the description of the picture, the artist and background information on the picture (e.g. how it was used in the film, why it was rejected, Peter Jackson�s ideas). For instance, on his sketch of the Balrog, John Howe describes why he chose to give the Balrog wings (and Peter Jackson�s response to it). Alan Lee's beautiful paintings and drawings are also showcased in this book.
If you are a fan of the books and/or the film, are interested in art, or enjoy books with lots (and I mean loads) of wonderful visuals, then I couldn�t recommend this book highly enough. I�m already looking forward to The Art of The Two Towers and can�t wait to see what Gary Russell has in store for us in the next couple of years!

Great insight into a great movie

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in art (John Howe, Alan Lee and Christian Rivers' pencil sketches and illustrations are just beautiful!), how movies are made (you will not believe what a painstaking process they went through drawing and drawing for almost 5 years just to give us a 3 hours long movie), or just looking for enhancing the pleasure they got from Peter Jackson's beautiful movie, by learning a little more of the details that make Mr. Jackson's movie and J.R.R. Tolkien's book great.
I am not even listing LotR die-hard fans, as I know they wouldn't be able to call themselves die-hard without having this book and be able to sleep at night.
I have a complaint though, altough the book has incredible paintings that will get you excited, after I finished it, I had the feeling that it was not complete. I expected more drawings, more insight from the creators. It also ends abrubtly, you turn a page of Balrog sculpture and it ends. I at least expected a word from the author.
I try to be understanding as I imagine the amount of material they must have and the limitations of putting them together in a readable book, but I can't stop from thinking that this was another marketing strategy, making us buy the latest 5 disc Dvd edition...

Why Engagement Efforts Often Fail

Unless you have been complete away from the workplace for a number of years you are well aware that the old command and control style of management no longer works. Methods and tactics to get employees fully engaged in their work - as opposed to simply complying - have been the recent buzz of most employee improvement programs. Unfortunately they often fall short of their goal.

Mark Royal and Tom Agnew have written a very engaging book The Enemy of Engagement. Mark and Tom are leaders in the Hay Group's employee research division and have drawn on their vast experience to present a compelling case for what employers must do in addition to getting employees fully engaged.

The most often case is where employees are fully engaged, they like their work and their employer but are frustrated in trying to do their job. They lack adequate training, are held back by inefficient processes, are unclear about the key tasks to accomplish or are uncertain they have the authority to do/change certain things. In short, far too many employees are frustrated in trying to do their job and management is totally unaware of or turning a blind eye to their frustration.

Frustration will eventually lead to employees seeking other employment or disengaging - becoming compliant. Neither will give the company the results it wants or needs.

The book is well written and has a unique approach to getting the message across. The authors alternate with theory and a fictional case study. The case study actually brings the concepts to life. It shows in no uncertain terms what happens when employees are frustrated. They leave, they disengage and the company suffers.

One of the major culprits of frustration is poor communication. While most companies think they are communicating, one way conversations are simply not enough. Management must learn to listen to the frustration of the workers. Most workers want to do a good job. As humans most are hard wired to seek mastery of what we do. But when we are lacking the tools necessary, frustration sets in and eventually we give up.

The alternative theory chapters gives a good discussion of the principles involved in identifying and solving frustrations facing employees. There are some very specific questions managers need to ask themselves in order to combat the enemy of engagement.

You may believe that all your employees are fully engaged and this could not happen in your office/workplace. But from the examples in the book and the real world experiences the authors talk about, frustrated employees are more the rule than the exception.

This should be on the reading list of all managers. There is some very valuable information which will improve employee engagement by eliminating or reducing employee frustration.

Ideas for raising performance when resources are limited

This is that rare thing, a genuinely useful business book that tells us something new. Namely that all the time, money and effort businesses spend measuring and boosting employee motivation is wasted if we dont follow through and make sure people can actually get their jobs done. The Enemy of Engagement clearly explains the concept of "workplace frustration" and sets out some straightforward ways of dealing with it.

The book illustrates its central idea with a fictional scenario that narrates the story. The authors have clearly gone to a lot of trouble to create the history of Bernette Bank and the very believable characters that work in its online banking division. This storytelling is a powerful, credible way of showing what workplace frustration does to companies and what they can do to prevent it.

The Enemy of Engagement is timely as well. The Bernette story shows that just telling employees to "do more with less" -- which is what were all being asked to do right now -- is not enough. It suggests instead that businesses can get more performance out of their people without the need to spend more money or have people work long hours. Theres plenty of practical advice on how to achieve this -- and for skeptical managers, plenty of statistics from Hay Group studies that show the value of tackling workplace frustration head-on.

At 228 pages its a quick read (four hours max) that gives businesses something that's very welcome in the current climate -- ideas for raising performance when resources are limited.

How to "take effective action to promote high levels of employee enablement and unleash the full potential of your people"

Extensive research in recent years by highly reputable firms such as Gallup, TowersWatson, and the Great Place to Work Institute� leaves little (if any) doubt that there is a direct correlation between positive or negative employee engagement and organizational success or failure. Seven years of research conducted by the Hay Group's employee research division revealed what Mark Royal and Tom Agnew characterize in this book as "a significant, but often overlooked, threat to both employee engagement and individual and organizational success": frustration. More specifically, "a highly engaged employee's inability to succeed in a role due to organizational barriers or the bulk of her or his talents, skills, and abilities to the [given] job."

Royal and Agnew have written a business narrative during which fictional characters address real-world issues. The co-authors (1) introduce the concept of workplace frustration, (2) differentiate employee engagement (helping employees to motivate themselves to succeed) from employee enablement (developing their ability to perform effectively), (3) explain the nature and potential impact of "tenure effect," (4) introduce a systematic review of root causes of workplace frustration and identify "key aspects of the work environment that should be focus areas for managers in understanding current enablement levels within their teams," (5) then shift their attention to strategies for minimizing workplace frustration, and in the final chapters, and (6) discuss the role of managers as "organizational change agents."

What sets this book apart from other recently published books on the problems of employee engagement and how to solve them is Royal and Agnew's focus on employees who were once actively and productively engaged and have either become passively engaged ("mailing it in") or actively disengaged and, in some instances, perhaps even hostile and toxic. During exit interviews of highly-valued employees before they depart to work elsewhere, they express frustration with working conditions (especially those who supervise them) that prevent them from personal growth and/or professional development.

Mark Royal and Tom Agnew agree, adding that employees also need leaders and managers who make performance expectations crystal, explain how each individual's efforts help to achieve the strategic goals of the given enterprise, and provide support and encouragement that empower them, thereby enable them, to succeed.

Excellent Controls Primer.

I suppose it should go without saying that a book about VB-5 Control Creation Edition would be a little beyond the level of introductory programming. After all, that software package was never intended for beginners as it was designed expressly for creating controls to be used in other programs. This isn't to say that a standard program can't be written with CCE and that it can't be used to learn the language, but that is not its purpose. Microsoft included a compiler that works only for controls creation and not for standard programs. Standard programs can be written and 'run' within the development ide, but cannot be compiled into executables for stand-alone use.

The author takes a gradual approach to controls building, starting with some simple designs before tackling web and database access. This book won't make anyone a controls 'guru' but it will teach the fundamentals. After completing this book a person should have a solid understanding of controls and should be able to build on that foundation and create controls of their own design. For those interested, Microsoft pulled the plug on VB-5 CCE a few years ago and it has become rather hard to find nowdays. Some diligent searching on the web is almost guaranteed to result in a good download, though, so don't give up. If you already have VB-5 or VB-6 you can make use of this book without the CCE since both of those platforms include that functionality built in.

Great book even though its out of date!

This book is a dream! It explains in a few, well written words what ActiveX controls are, how they differ from regular programs, and what are the parts that you must code to make them work. That means even though 5.0 was long ago and far away, it was still easy for me to create controls today because I understood what "parts" made up the "whole". This book is a thin book. It has been my experience that thin computer books are either garbage, or condensed jewels of knowledge that don't need a lot of words to get their point across. This book falls into the latter category.

I wanted to learn something about Control Creation

However, I began to hit a brick wall with some of the examples (after the 5th chapter). Book assumes you know VB language, and that you just need to know how to use it to create activeX controls. Although it wasn't as helpful as I had hoped, I did give it 4 stars because a VB programmer WILL find this book useful. And the stuff that I could do made for some great learning about control creation.

Panos M. Pardalos is one of the leading experts in global optimization and control theory. V. Part III expands on the theme of technological change as a key factor in determining the pattern of specialization in international trade and addresses questions about the effects of innovation, or lack of it, on a country's international trade position. The concluding essays examine the issue of protectionismalong with other elements of trade policy, showing how protectionist policies, used as an export enhancement device by some national governments, may shift world specialization to the advantage of the protectionist nations. Classic Roman Reader

This book, as a fellow author of this type of genre, (the book Split From Earth), was a fascinating read. Although a bit wordy, as well as very classical, for those of us who are truly into the Grecian mythology world it is a well written book that most would love to have on their bookshelf.
I would recommend this book to any one interested in either classics or Greek mythology.
