About the Author
Lorraine Hansberry was the youngest American playwright ever to win the Best American Play Award from the New York Drama Critics' Circle. Her other worksinclude The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window and Les Blancs. She died of cancer at thirty-four.

Much more powerful than Raisin in the Sun

Lorraine Hansberry is best remembered for "Raisin in the Sun" which, even today, many feel is a strong statement against racism. However, "Raisin" pales in comparison to "Les Blancs", a much more militant and radical statement which, I have not doubt, must have genuinely frightened the liberal establishment in the 1960's. This play was decades ahead of it's time and it is no wonder that the more comfortable "Raisin" is what Ms Hansberry is mostly remembered for. Anyone who knows both of these works will realize that the world lost a great treasure when cancer stole this brilliant African-American lesbian's life from us when she was just 34. (Although Ms. Hansberry, married a white Jewish man, Robert Nemiroff in 1953, the couple separated in 1957 and divorced in 1964. She wrote some articles for "The Ladder", the first lesbian periodical in the United States, in the late 1950's.)

Beautiful work by a great artist

Beautiful work by a great artist. Died way too young. She was ahead of her time. Her plays are relevant today. From the introduction: " Hansberry once said in an interview that her goal as a dramatist was to “reach a little closer to people, to see if we can share some illumination about each other.”

Buy if interested in racial justice and/or Hansberry's development as a writer

Hansberry was a great writer who wrote extensively about racial injustice in the United States. These plays continue her condemnation of racism past and present. In Les Blancs Hansberry writes primarily about the freedom struggle in Africa. The "problem" with this is that it is a play, and it requires a good imagination or having seen the play to fully visualize some the role of the unnamed and only woman character, who is so vital to the play that she might be considered the most important character.

More problematical for me is her satire of the liberal American journalist who plays a recurring if minor role. It is sometimes an all-too-true indictment and it reflects her justified anger and despair at the state of race relations in America at the end of the sixties, but it is a cardboard figure and therefore potentially polarizing. I have read that it did so at the first performance in 1970. I did not find it polarizing, more sad that Hansberry seemed to have lost hope, but as satires go, it was more heavy handed than most.

Work of poetry

The pages aren't flowing over with words and the cover is kinda cheesy. What is that saying? Oh yeah, "You can't judge a book by its what?"

I did a "Search inside the book" before I bought it and I have to say that I liked the original cover better. That's neither here nor there, though.

This is a work of poetry; you could even say a piece of art. It is better left to those who can appreciate the true unveiling of a heart. He doesn't need to spell it out because you'll either get it or you won't.

As a woman, it filled my heart with love. It is so tender, respectful, and honest. His words flow like a hummingbird floats, full of grace and beauty. I believe that he expresses what every woman wants to hear.

If it doesn't melt your heart I don't know what to say, because mine is in a puddle on the floor.

No more confusion

I bought this book thinking it was Brandon Boyd of Incubus. partly because the book is being sold with Incubus CD's but after receving the book and reading it I was not too sure. not to say its not a good book its okay, just a little mushy. Than after going to the book signing on May 12th some girls brought this book for Brandon to sign and he did not even know this book existed. so I just wanted to let everyone know as to not be confused this is NOT a Brandon Boyd of Incubus book.
And thank you to Brandon for clearing things up!!!

may not be the brandon you expect but he's still good

though i agree with those saying that you should research the books first, i must admit i was expecting the other brandon when i bought this (and no, i'm not a sad little teenage girl, but i like incubus' lyrics and am a huge fan of the BAND not just the singer).
now that's over with... this book may be a little mushy to some, but it really has some beautiful lines in there that can move even the least romantic of you. it's just full of short poems that really make you think about your own experiences.

Almost anything from Bley is important in some way, and this short read was great. He was at the center of much of the music that inspired me back in the day, and he writes like he plays and like he speaks, too. There isn't a hesitation to say it and be done with it, and move on to the next zone. If improvised music is important to you,read this slim but vibrant volume. It is a great first book for someone who wants to know about their dreams. It is very easy to find what you want. Overall GREAT BOOK

A Good Basic Resource for the Beginner

The beautiful artwork drew me to this book when I found it on a sale table. I initially planned to give it to a sister with an interest in dream reading but liked it well enough to keep it for myself. I typically use a more detailed system (Strephon Kaplan-Williams' Dream Cards) and thought that this might be a useful quick reference to keep on the desk. The symbol descriptions are brief and include both the psychological and mystical meanings. Having studied both, I'll say that they are accurate enough. The introductory chapters cover the basics of dreams and dreaming in simple terms for the beginner. My only criticism is of the indexing, which frequently refers the reader to another topic, sometimes to end up with no information at all. Still, this is better than most books I've seen and I recommend it.

"The Hidden Meaning of Dreams" is a very interesting book -- now if only I can remember my dreams to look them up! My only complaint is the glossary, because it doesn't give you page numbers, and when you go to a certain topic and then tells you to go somewhere else, they don't give you the page number. Other than that, it's a good book. I recommend.

About the Author

Saundra K Ciccarelli is a Professor of Psychology at Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, Florida. She received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. She is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science. Originally interested in a career as a researcher in the development of language and intelligence in developmentally delayed children and adolescents, Dr. Ciccarelli had publications in the American Journal of Mental Deficiency while still at Peabody. However, she discovered a love of teaching early on in her career. This led her to the position at Gulf Coast State College, where she has been teaching Introductory Psychology and Human Development for over 30 years. Her students love her enthusiasm for the field of psychology and the many anecdotes and examples she uses to bring psychology to life for them. Before writing this text, Dr. Ciccarelli authored numerous ancillary materials for several introductory psychology and human development texts.�

J Noland White is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Georgia College, Georgia’s Public Liberal Arts University, located in Milledgeville. He received both his B.S. and M.S. in Psychology from Georgia College and joined the faculty in 2001 after receiving his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee. As a licensed psychologist, Dr. White has worked as a consultant in a variety of settings, including adult mental health, developmental disabilities, and juvenile justice. Back on campus, he operates an active lab and with his students is currently investigating the psychophysiological characteristics and neuropsychological performance of adults with and without ADHD. Outside of the lab, Dr. White is engaged in collaborative research examining the effectiveness of incorporating technology in and out of the college classroom to facilitate student learning. He also serves as a mentor for other faculty wanting to expand their use of technology with their classes. In 2008, he was a recipient of the Georgia College Excellence in Teaching Award.

Good for College Studies

I needed to rent this for my sister's class and found this was the PSYCH 101 book. She told me it got the job done, and the book overall helped with her studies. She returned it, and the process was very simple. Amazon gives you a label, and you just ship it back in the box you got it in.

A book so good it may even be great. A scholastic achievement of epic scope and untold scale. Wow... just wow.

So very full of words and punctuation and believe me there are periods and commas everywhere but most paragraphs start with a weird dent in them. They broke the piggy bank on page numbers, each is different.The pictures use color but none of them are scratch and sniff. I don't mean to spoil the end but it turns out that "it's your parents fault". I wish I could have filled the night sky with all the stars I would like to give this book, five seems so inappropriate.

About the Author
Frederic L. Pryor received his Ph.D. in economics from Yale University. Although his primary base for more than 35 years has been Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, he has also taught or carried out research at the University of Michigan, the University of California, the University of Indiana, Yale University, and several universities in Switzerland and France. His academic writings include 13 books in the field of economic systems and more than 120 articles in professional journals. As a consultant, Professor Pryor has held a variety of positions for the World Bank, the State of Pennsylvania, the Danish government, several departments of the US government, the Soros International Economic Advisory Group, the Hoover Institution, the Brookings Institution, and the Wissenschaftzentrum Berlin. At present he is a Senior Research Scholar at Swarthmore College. He also serves on the boards of several non-profit institutions.
