Great title for the implementer & worker

I've read a lot of lean books - most are high on rhetoric, short on example, and woefully short on real life examples of tools. This book is the complete opposite. This is the down and dirty guide to getting things done - designing, implementing, and most importantly, sustaining a visual work environment to reduce motion and focus on getting things done.

Pros:
- It's not a list of "hey, I saw that." It's a fully developed system for designing & implementing visual controls. Lots of excellent, achievable processes for rolling out
- The rules for deciding who needs to know what, when, and how, are stellar. Asking a few simple questions can eliminate a lot of the non-visuality of the typical environment and reframe everything.
- It's totally focused on removing motion (you may call it waste.) - by ensuring the right types of information are in the right place
- This book contains concrete things that can be done. It's not a primer to buy the author's consulting services, or a thinly veiled sell. I appreciate that.
- Finally, and most importantly - the examples! Even if you're down the road of visual implementation quite a way, you'll find a lot to like in this book. I've found dozens of "duh!" items that I'm going to pursue with my operators.

Cons:
- A lot of the pictures are reused multiple times. That's OK, and explained in the book, but I would have loved to have seen even more examples
- It would be great for a website login to come with the book so we can view high resolution versions of some of the solutions. I really liked some of them and would love to, er, borrow, the ideas!

Chasing Metrics

With 25+ years of manufacturing experience, at different operational levels and exposure to various "improvement systems", I feel there still seems to be something missing. 5S is neat. Mistake Proofing is cool and Six Sigma is tight, but is it all enough? I’ve come to recognize that all our performance metrics simply boil down to being indicators of a job done right. If you’re doing work right you maintain on-time deliveries. If you’re doing work right you ensure low or no defects. If you’re doing work right you have reliable cycle times etc. So then why do companies, regardless of their manufacturing genre, continually find themselves relying on unscheduled OT? Why do we revert to inspecting quality in? Why do we continually pay expedites on materials and freight? The list of idiosyncrasies we undeniably and uniformly experience day in and day out is as painful as it is inexplicable. Obviously, there are many interconnected variables contributing to this, but may I be candid and suggest it could be because we honestly don't know any better? It seems to be proven by our reoccurring actions of doing WHATEVER IT TAKES to meet those “metrics”. The fact is, nailing targets is not necessarily a reflection of work performance as it ought to be.

I hope you can agree that truly effective manufacturing is not about what you are putting together but rather, it is about how expectations are communicated, how process steps are organized and understood throughout the whole company. It’s about providing a culture that can foster the correct behavior from all of us – management and associates alike. It’s about being honest with ourselves and with each other. There are proven, systematic methods of gaining sustainable growth, finding real margin and maintaining meaningful results for any employer willing to look beyond merely profit alone and instead look towards Excellence, that is inherently and wildly profitable in and of itself.

The “Improvement System” I highly recommend, is one pioneered by Dr. Gwendolyn Galsworth and is called "Work That Makes Sense". A thoughtful and complete training system and culture building philosophy that unites the mechanics of business, along with the psychology of our human behavior, providing the knowledge, principles and tools needed to implement workplace visuality at every level of the organization. What is workplace visuality? It cannot be adequately described in these few sentences, but it is vital information exactly when you need it. It is communication without interruption. It is clarification emerging from confusion. It is confidence that the expectations of work are being performed precisely as desired. It is, in her words, "The language of work". It is the infrastructure model your company can utilize to ensure that "What is supposed to happen does happen on time, every time, day or night because of visual solutions". For me this is the elusive, yet intuitively obvious aspect missing from our manufacturing worlds. Once experienced I’m confident you too will agree.

A good book for those seeking fundamental understanding of financial analysis

This book and its accompanying CD is a valuable resource for those seeking a fundamental understanding of financial statements, their usage and signifcance. The chapters are well organized and walks the reader through various aspects of financial analysis. This book lays the foundations of fundamental analysis.

On the filp side, the language could be a little difficult to interpret at times (more Harvardish or Yaleish than common English)and can be a little uninspiring. The authors assume that readers have a basic understanding of accounting which can throw off some readers. But I guess if someone is seeking to get their feet wet in financial analysis, it is safe to presume that he or she will atleast have the basic knowledge in accounting.

Overall, this is a very good and useful book with neumerous real world examples of financial analysis at play. As I have mentioned before, this book lays down the foundation for fundamental analysis. I would recommend this book to all those who are currently persuing a career within the finaicial industry or corporate finance as analyst or aspire to become one - This book is a must read for you.

If you're engaged in the CFA curriculum, this book comes as a recommended (practically required) textbook. That's unfortunate because this book's various authors are inconsistent in making the material readable and understandable.

Yes, the book is comprehensive. Chapter topics include: Accrual Concept, Analysis of Cash Flows, Ratio and Financial Analysis, Analysis of Long-Lived Assets, Analysis of Income Taxes, Analysis of Financing Liabilities, Leases and Off-Balance-Sheet Debt, Pensions, Intercorporate Investments, Multinational Operations, and Business Combinations. Great stuff to know - practical matters to understand and master.

However, this book presumes a solid understanding of intermediate level accounting, and provides little or no review of these concepts before delving into the topical material. It makes learning more challenging, and when time is of the essence, that's problematic. So I found myself "slogging" through the course material in an effort to learn Level II material.

Supplemental reading is often required to make up for what the authors fail to teach effectively. Here's a tip: Schaum's Intermediate Accounting II has an excellent chapter #10 on Pension Accounting which will benefit you in your studies. Likewise, I have found other Schaums's Outlines to be very instructive and beneficial (consider reading my other reviews).

The CFA Institute would do well to consider recommending other Financial Analysis textbooks to cover the same material - a book that is more readable and user-friendly. One that's more engaging rather than one which requires heavy plodding!

Very confusing textbook

I agree with the more critical reviewers. I'm reading the book for the CFA curriculum and the (mandatory) assignments taken from it are a real pain. The ideas are introduced in the most difficult way possible, the graphical presentation and examples chosen only add to the confusion and in my opinion a reader who does not already have a solid grasp of accounting will simply be unable to follow. By comparison, the other accounting chapters from the CFA curriculum, by different authors, are written in a much more comprehensible (and stimulating) style.

I do not deny that the authors have a profound knowledge of the subject - but this is not enough in order to write a useful textbook. Clarity in presentation and didactical style are also essential, and the authors are unfortunately not very inspired in both items.I hesitated between rating the book with one or two stars but in the end I decided for one star - why be indulgent with authors that are experts in their subject matter but are unwilling (unable?) to put up the extra effort needed in order to keep a reader interested and motivated?

Here's an appeal to the CFA institute - keep the subjects in the curriculum but change the textbook. For instance, "Intermediate Accounting" by Spiceland et alia might be an alternative - it's also quite difficult and demanding but at least the student will be given a fair chance to understand - not just memorize and muddle through- the contents.

Run faster than Achilles!,

and perhaps the book won't overtake you and you won't have to buy it.

I purchased this product some time ago, but didn't feel up to the task of reviewing it. What for? Who heeds bad revs?

It's a bad (or rather, unworthy of its theme), bad book all right. I'll be brief:

1) Its exposure of philosophy is superficial and biased (I don't have the space here to give examples, but trust me).

2) It's repetitive. For example, the stadium paradox is covered at least thrice: in page 4 of the Introduction (where it's stated that Aristotle exposed it as based on a fallacy); in pp. 29/31, where Mazur gives Zeno his due; and in page 41/42, where the book says Aristotle failed to understand the nature of the paradox. The other paradoxes (especially the arrow) are also analized several times.

3) It's incoherently written. For example, in page 132, Mazur writes "The arrow paradox also requires an understanding of limits as a mathematical model for instantaneous velocity, which calculus treats as a derivative, an instrument that creates limits of average changes in a dependent variety in small intervals on an independent variable. The model here is to view each point on the arrow's trajectory as though it were a limit of a sequence of rational numbers on the number line, so the arrow's path is assured a persistent even flow of space in the continuity of time. In effect it assumes, quite correctly, that all numbers on the number line are convergent sequences of rational numbers". Half a page (in the book's oversize font) completely wasted. And don't you think that a reader who understands what "convergent sequences of rational numbers" means would also know what is a real number?

4) Mazur manages to be at the same time irrelevant, at the limit of his knowledge, and a provider of meaningless detail. Now hear this (p. 196)!: "The quantum mechanics story began when a German physicist named Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck asked why subatomic particles radiate a blue light when they travel through a non vacuum-medium faster than the speed of light in that medium". Why, Mr. Mazur, methought Cerenkov radiation was discovered much later. What Planck (what would have happened had
he had only three names?) was looking for was a way to avoid the so called "ultraviolet catastrophe" in the black body radiation formula.

Bear in mind that each of these examples could be multiplied almost indefinitely. On the other hand, nothing on supertasks, or the legitimacy of conflating the geometrical and the real number continua, or the conceptual resemblance between Zeno's paradoxes and Kant's antinomies, and the question these place on the possibility of a represtation-based understanding of Nature; ... .

Do you think I'm unfair? But Mazur strikes me as intellectually dishonest in the same sense as Lacan when he equated, before an innocent crowd of bewildered and awed disciples, the phallus with i, the unity of imaginary numbers.

In short, if you think that the story of math and physics consists of knowing that in 1586 Stevin, Maurice & alia often met at a tavern where "water, dripping from cracks in its massive stone walls, kept [it] cool and damp. Candles and torch sconces provided moderate light in the windowless room. An intoxicating smell of fermenting spirits seeped from a whiskey and brandy distillery next door. Beer was cheap", and that they "would often sit together at a long sticky oak table coated with layers of sugars dried from decades of beer spills" (pp. 68/69), or that Dirichlet's names were Johann Peter Gustav Lejeune (p. 116), then you'll learn a lot from this book.

In any other case, avoid this travesty.

Exploration of Zeno's Paradox from ancient as well as modern lense

Zeno's Paradox tends to be told from the perspective of the tortoise and the hare. The question is posed with the hare starting behind the tortoise at t=0, each time the hare runs the distance between the two, the tortoise would have moved forward by an amount equal to its slower speed multiplied by the time. As this process goes in ad infitum question becomes how can the hare overtake the tortoise despite the hare being faster? Asked another way, how can an infinite number of steps be finite. Zeno's paradox has a long history of analysis and the formal answer to the initial question was resolved several millenium later when it was realized that an infinite sum might still be a finite number. Joseph Mazur explores the topic yet again by questioning whether calculus based answers tell us what is happening in the physical world. It is an interesting book and does a good job describing mathematical history of analysis and the evolution of many ideas in physics. It is not really about zeno's paradox throughout and some parts are quite long winded but definitely it does a unique job of using an ancient question about the nature of reality and re-apply the logic to our understanding of the physical world today.

The book is split into 4 parts. The first sets the stage with ancient greece and describes zeno's paradoxs, which are several and discusses how the ancient greeks approached and debated the problems. The second part explores pre-calculus Renaissance and how the nature of physical reality and motion starts to be explored more rigorously with Galileo and Kepler. The third section describes the evolution of the math. Analytic geometry is discussed and the stage is set for Newton and Leibniz and the world enters the Enlightenment. The third section goes back to discussing physics and in particular modern theories of physics as well as classical relativity.

The motivation to use Zeno's paradox is, despite it being a mathematical problem, it implicitly asks what is the nature of space and time. How divisible is time, how divisible is space. Is the topology of space the same as the real line, which is the mathematical structure for which the answer to zeno's paradox was answered on? The book is a nice history lesson, as a philosophical enquiry i think its quite weak though. There is no answer's to zeno's paradox in an objective sense, if you assume that zeno's paradox is well posed because you can infinitely divide space and time then calculus gives the resolution. If you ask the question and then asks whether it is how nature really is and if nature isnt really like that, then the original paradox isnt well posed as the hare/tortoise relative steps would not be well posed at a certain point if space wasnt continuous. I enjoyed parts of the book as it is readable and easy to follow and brings up the history of thought on some of math and science's most important ideas. I dont think this is particular thought provoking with respect to Zeno's paradox and its relevance today though.

This is another book written in the same engaging formula, seen before in Mazur's other books. Besides the scientific facts, there is always a human element, and bits of trivia about the people that made these amazing discoveries. A fascinating mix of facts and literature, math and philosophy that draws you into a joyfully thought-provoking read.
