Fraser and Pare's Diagnosis of Diseases of the Chest

This book is an all time medical classic. It presents one of the most comprehensive collection of chest roentgenograms found any where. It's organization is unique in that it allows one to arrive at a diagnosis by starting with a particular pattern on a chest xray. The authors are clearly master clinicians. This is one of the best organized and most extensive medical text that deals with differential diagnosis. It is a worthy addition to any collection of medical books worthy of being called a library.

A fantasy of history and the imagination

Do you remember climbing trees, as a child? When I was a child, our neighborhood was full of giant elms that grew into a massive arch that turned our street into a leafy tunnel. I'd climb up on the lower branches, and dream about being brave enough to climb to the very top of the tree.I imagined building tree houses, where my friends I I could camp out high in the trees, our own special places where grownups were not allowed.

Italo Calvino imagines Cosimo, a boy from a family of minor nobles of the late 18th Century who one day takes to the trees in an act of rebellion against his family, vowing never to set foot on the Earth again. He keeps his promise, traveling to foreign lands, falling in love, corresponding with Voltaire and Diderot and other great minds of his day, participating in the intellectual and the revolutionary movements. Cosimo's younger brother narrates the story of how the young baron took to the trees, and what became of him.

Italo Calvino uses his gifts in storytelling and description to create a world in which a preposterous notion becomes commonplace. The most preposterous characters and events can seem ordinary as Calvino describes them. Cosimo's mother, a German woman known as "the Generalessa," spend her time doing embroidery, but not of the sort you'd expect. "The lace and embroidery were usually in the designs of geographical maps; our mother would stretch them over cushions or tapestry and stick in pins and tiny flags, showing the disposition of battles in the Wars of Succession, which she knew by heart..."

There is also Battista, the sister of Cosimo and our narrator, "a kind of stay at home nun," confined to the castle after a questionable encounter with a young noble, who dresses in a nun's wimple and takes her revenge on the family by preparing exquisite yet inedible dishes. Cosimo's uncle (the illegitimate brother of the Duke) dresses in Turkish robes and a fez and busies himself looking after the legal affair of the family and making complex plans for canals and hydraulic systems that will never be built. Next door is a family with whom Cosimo's family has been feuding, and they have a young daughter- but beyond that you'll have to read the book for yourself.

This is Calvino at his best, the teller of fabulous tales and a crafter of exquisite sentences who can catapult the reader far up into the trees, and beyond.

This book immediately became my favorite novel that took me into the world of uninhibited dreams and actualizing an idea that is so coveted as a child, I would have loved to escape all the responsibilities of the world that was inevitable as I grew up and just live in the trees and travel the world this way. this book just transforms your mind into a brave little boy learning to cope with the reality that is his conflicted political inevitable demise.

A parable disquised as an intellecual exercise, or is it?

Never underestimate Italo Calvino, for what you think you are reading may turn out to be something else entirely from your original impressions. That is the case with the relatively short novel, The Baron in the Trees. It is true that I found it enchanting in the beginning and several chapters captured that enchantment, but there are sections that seem totally irrelevant to the plot and by the time I finished the book, I realized it really had no plot. It is an intellectual exercise disguised as a parable. Or is it a long parable disguised as an intellectual exercise? It offers an alternative reality based on our historic reality. Calvino takes an illogical premise that a young man decides at age 12 to life the rest of his life in the trees, and then constructs a world of detail around that premise, thus keeping the reader in a state of suspension. The narrator is the younger brother to the Baron who observes and relates to us what he sees, what he interprets, and sometimes the inner motivations of the other characters. It is the love affair between Cosimo, the Baron in the trees, and Viola, his childhood girlfriend and adult lover that is the peak or climax of the story for all energy and action leads to this point and the recedes from their affair. Despite the young narrator observations and interpretations, the Baron remained a mystery for me and I finally came to the conclusion that he is the ultimate outsider, the one who sees all human society and social constructions from a philosophical distance. Yet, it is passion an love for Viola that causes Cosimo to lose the perspective of the outsider and to be bound in his passions and desires. The character of Viola is fascinating for as a child she pits boy against boy and as a woman she pits man against man. Yet Calvino has a fascinating interpretation of why she uses jealous against the man she loves most in her life. Enough said, for this is a critical part of the book I don't want to spoil for other readers. It is a long parable about choosing to be an outsider, to look at the reset of humanity from a distance, and yet to be bound by the human passions that bound all of us. It is a long parable because there is much in human existence to explore. About every five pages Calvino offers a charming and sometimes enchanting comment or observation or description that reveals him to be the master of irony and abstraction. If you are ready for an author to play games with your expectations, read it.

This book is an introduction to climate science and global change. It includes the scientific background in physics, chemistry and biology. The science chapters are interleaved with biographical material including personal reminiscences.
The science chapters discuss the history of development of ideas in geology, the discovery of Earth’s very different climates in the distant past, and the climate oscillations of the ice ages. Special treatment is given to past warm climates. The role of greenhouse gases in controlling Earth’s climate, along with a discussion of the associated physics. It develops the idea that humans have played a role in climate change throughout the past few millennia, rather than just since the beginning of the industrial revolution. It concludes by introducing the idea that the result of the present perturbation may be the transition to an ice-free warm world.

About the Author
Bill Hay began his academic career at University of Illinois in Urbana in 1960. From 1968 to 1974 he was Professor at both Illinois and the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. After serving as Dean of the Rosenstiel School he moved to Washington, D.C. to work on ensuring future scientific drilling in the ocean. In 1982 he moved to the University of Colorado, investigating ancient climates with colleagues at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Since 1988 he has also served as Guest and/or Professor at the Universities of Munich, Kiel and Greifswald in Germany, the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and the University of Vienna in Austria. He retired from the University of Kiel in 2002. He now lives in the Rocky Mountains, but returns to Europe frequently to teach intensive short courses.

Possibly the best book I have ever read

I have never been interested in weather/climate/global-warming, and I must admit that I only started to read this book because a copy was given to me as a gift.

This book is incredible!

It should really be called "A history of Earth's scientific experiments" or "Loads of really interesting stuff about science" or something similar,. I'd always wanted to read a book about science which not only told you what the science reveals but also how it was discovered and how it can be checked. I thought I'd found that book when I read Bill Bryson's "A short history of nearly everything" but now this book has taken it's place, by a massive amount. It is like Bill Bryson's book but on steroids! It is fascinating to read how ideas have changed over the years and what discoveries caused those changes.

Electrons, protons, neutrons, photons, radioactive decay, fusion, fision, chemical reactions, refraction, reflection, waves, electromagnetic spectrum, laws of thermodynamics, black body radiation, chaos systems, Max Plank, Bohr, Pauli exclusion principle, planetary orbits, sun cycles, cosmic rays, and loads more too! All of this stuff is in there. It is explained so clearly, Bill is a fantastic teacher.

If (like myself) you have never been interested in global warming then don't let the main subject of this book put you off. It's like a book of everything about science, with a "PS: And we have screwed up the atmosphere" near the end.

Ignore what people are saying in their reviews about errors. There are a few errors which undoubtedly appeared during publishing, but there are few and they are *really* obvious even if unfamiliar with the subject.

This is the book I have been wishing for since I was a child. Not reading this book is an injustice!

A great scientific Reference

A climate bible (at least in length) written for the non-climate scientist. A reference that can be used by anyone who wants to understand each individual component of climate science and climate change. An indepth science report written in street language. I would suggest this book to any student or individual who wants a quick reference guide to climate science.

Buy it, read, and be informed

So why did I read this mammoth book on climate change? About 4 years ago I had an encounter with someone who completely denied AGW, and sent me dozens of links to websites that claim to discredit climate science. Then last year two people at work casually dismissed the science of climate change. So I decided the only way to get to the bottom of this was to read.

To begin with I read most of A. Barrie Pittocks's excellent and very readable book, Climate Change, The Science, Impacts and Solutions

Pittock's book is exceedingly informative and very well written with regards to the climate we can expect under various scenarios, including its effect on weather, crops, water supply, etc, It also goes into why scientists think humans are the primary cause of warming. This included discussion about the orbital variations of the earth, and how, right now, the climate should be cooling rather than warming, what ratios of isotopes of CO2 tell us about our contribution to warming, the degree of impact caused by each type of greenhouse gas and much more. After reading Pittcock's book, I wanted to know more detail about orbital variations and the history, physics, and chemistry of the climate system, which is where Hay's book comes to the rescue, quite beautifully.

I have to say, the viewpoint of geologists fits into the understanding of climate very well, since geologists have discovered the climate of prehistoric times, and the abrupt changes in climate that have occurred multiple times, all discussed in detail in Hay's book. I hadn't ever even thought of this before I began to read Hay's book, but there you have it. Geologists have gleaned a wealth of information about prehistoric climate from ice, fossil and sediment research, and consequently have some very important things to say about the direction our current climate is headed in. So we are all fortunate for the unique point of view that Dr. Hay, and other geologists bring to bear on this subject.

But Dr. Hay brings much more in this book that just the point of view of a geologist. In this book, he covers nearly all of the important scientific discoveries that have taken place since the beginning of the Renaissance, from the development of our understanding of water waves, to understanding of electricity and the atom, and to quantum mechanics. The story of each discovery includes short biographies and interesting points about the people who made them, and how they were made. The discussion about how an estimate of the speed of light was made by astronomers during the Renaissance is especially fascinating!

The book also goes into major geological discoveries, like dating the age of the earth, and continental drift. It includes discussion of author's life work, which involved the science of using isotopic ratios in ice cores, land and ocean sediment to re-construct what the climate was like millions of years ago!! This leads into a discussion about the PETM, a time when Co2 went off the charts for reasons not clearly understood, and which lead to an extinction of ocean plankton.

I found after reading this book that I have become much more versed in the geological history, chemistry, and physics of the climate system (and in physics and chemistry in general!) than I ever could have been had I not picked it up. Science is not an easy subject, but Dr. Hay's book goes into it in such a gentle, entertaining, and thorough way that you can't help coming away with a new point of view about the process of discovery in science, and how we came to our current understanding of the physical world and the climate system.

After reading "Experimenting", I've moved on to reading the somewhat more technical series of "Princeton Primers in Climate" books. However, "Experimenting" provides such a down-to-earth description of the physical process of the carbon cycle in atmosphere, land and ocean, that I find myself using it as a reference for better understanding discussions in the "Primer" books.

Finally, Dr. Hay's very enjoyable wine recommendations and intermezzos make for some light and interesting reading. The intermezzos reveal quite a lot about the author, how he became a geologist, what his education was like, who his colleagues were and are, challenges he faced as one of the directors of the deep sea drilling project (really fascinating stuff!!), and so on. They make the book personable and enjoyable in relief to the seriousness of this subject, a nice way to balance it all out.

A must have and must read for anyone who has suffered the death of a loved one.

Having recently lost our otherwise incredibly healthy and active son-in-law to sudden death from a heart attack, this book has proven to be a tremendous help, not only learning how to handle our grief, but to be better friends and parents to our daughter and her in-laws at this time of such sadness. It is an amazing tool to help process all the emotions and confusion that this circumstance has generated. Happily it was our grieving newly widowed daughter who suggested this wonderful book. Although it cannot deal with each and every type of loss, it covers such basic losses experienced with the death of a loved one in such simple-to-understand ways, and in such an organized presentation, as to allow the reader to internalize and universalize the tools offered to deal better with other griefs and losses experienced over a lifetime. It isn't "preachy" or clinical, but rather very naturally presented to the general public, with a depth of references to allow the reader to pursue more indepth study, should they so desire. Truly an amazing book. Many thanks to the author for her work for us!

I lost my dad on Jan. 30th 2016 and my mom on Feb. 13th 2016. Although both were older and I knew death comes to all, I was not expecting it the way I had pictured it. Life and death has it's own time table. The book helped not only me but my daughter, whom my mom helped raise. The sudden loss of both left a huge hole in our lives and we had very little support except each other. I went back to work while trying to handle the estate, thinking that I was doing well. If you don't have a good support system in place at work or home you will crash at some point. As much as others expect us to "move" on, we need to allow ourselves as much time as needed. How to go on Living gives us the permission and guide lines to keep going and to heal in our own time.
My heart goes out to all of you that's lost a love one and is looking for help.

The most informative book I have read concerning the grieving process. I covers everything. It even has separate sections for the various losses such as the loss of a spouse, child, parent. It has helped me immensely in my own grieving process.
