A Raw Authentic Healing Journey

I stumbled upon Melissa’s words when I needed them most, and have kept up with her work ever since. This living, breathing poetic medicine rings true in my bones, and has been a crucial part of my own personal healing. She is a rose-tongued wordsmith weaving words into a journey that leaves you with no choice but to finally honor that innermost part of you that has never had a voice. These words deliver heart-pounding inspiration to drop the mask and move from your core.

Melissa is a beacon of fearless authenticity. While most turn their backs on their shadow, she dances with it. This book is an invitation to join.

Provocations to Soulful Living

In the acknowledgements, Melissa La Flamme mentions her friends on Facebook who have seen these poems before. As one of them, though not having met her in person, it is interesting to see how these poems and essays appear on the page.

In a Forward, the writer on Shamanism and Jungian psychology, C. Michael Smith, suggests this is a new kind of poetry. In some ways I am less sure about that. The Ancient Greeks and many other cultures looked to their poets for inspiration at dark times. The poet was seen as someone inspired by the elements, and there always has been a shamanic element to poetry. Hence La Flamme is writing within a vein that has always been there in poetry. But on the other hand, what we have here is put in a contemporary way. It is a poetry of today. In that sense it is a new kind of poetry. In one poem, La Flamme writes:

"This is your invitation
to drench
your life with the wild blood
of your Dream."

The poems are certainly a provocation to do that. Influenced as she says by many figures including psychologists like Jung, Grof, Hillman and others, as well as poets like Rilke, Neruda, Robert Bly and Mary Oliver, she takes the reader on a journey. As a poet she is perhaps less worried about conventions of modern poetry (which incidentally I love also). There is perhaps more telling in these poetry than the showing which writing workshops would tell you to do. But maybe in that there is more.

The biography of the author on the back describes her as a shaman and teacher as well as a psychotherapist. Sometimes we need inspiration to move on. Someone to urge is to become more, to embrace the messy, suffering of life and embrace what it is about. These poems do that. I can see them being read on self-development courses, like other poems from the likes of Steve Taylor and Oraiah Mountain Dreamer. And what a journey we are taken on. As La Flamme states:

"To muster the heart
to stretch to the edge of what beckons you
is your ticket to ride.
This is what you are for."

The poems are an incitement to live life to the full carried off with great gusto. What we do with it is, of course up to us. Hopefully we will take up the call to the life that Melissa La Flamme gives voice to. These poems and essays are a reminder of how exciting it could be.

Her words are medicine...

This book was gifted to me by a dear friend of mine, Melanie Carlin. It arrived in the mail unexpectedly and has turned out to be a huge transformational tool like no other I've ever received. Melissa's contemplative words are medicine for my soul. I was so impressed with her poem CODE BREAKER that I contacted her and asked if I could repost it on a website that I'm in the process of designing for my own personal wounded healer, Beth. The poem defined what it is that Beth does for me with precision. I just knew I had to try to contact Melissa and ask for her permission to post it on the home page of the www. platypus-studios.com website. I was pleasantly surprised by the connection I made that day with Melissa.

She shares poems from her heart on her Facebook page and tags me now... I LOVE that she's accessible. She's real! Her poems help me recognize my inherent birthright to live freely and wholly. A celebration of sensuality! An exploration of presence, beauty and mystery and a reminder to experience and participate in my life. With words like this... "darkly shimmering caves of your damp Dream" ...she reminds me to quit hiding and come out of my own darkly lit cave to be seen by the world but most importantly... myself.

If you find yourself alone and longing for words that will resonate... this is the book to turn to. These glorious words are the very medicine we need in this day and age to help us live our TRUE life's purpose. In addition to providing friendship, her book also teaches and heals my soul. I'm learning new ways to work with the healing power of poetry through this inspirational collection of words. They sparked the inner poet which resides inside of this vessel I have grown to hate and am learning to love - my beautiful body.

Kostas Iatrou is the co-founder and Partner of AirConsulting Group. He holds a PhD in Air Transport Management from Cranfield University, UK. He has participated both as moderator and as speaker in numerous air transport conferences all over the world including ICAO, IATA, AFRAA, ATRS and ACI. He is Visiting Lecturer at Cranfield University, at the Aviation MBA of LUISS business school and was Assistant Visiting Professor at Daniel Webster Aviation College. His articles have featured in numerous air transport publications, such as the Journal of Air Transport Management, the Journal of Air Transportation, the Journal of Airport Management, the Annals of Air and Space Law of McGill University, Aerlines and he is Associate Editor of Journals of Air Transport Studies. He is a Member of the Networking Committee of ATRS and was the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 12th ATRS World Conference. Finally, he is the Secretary General of Hellenic Aviation Society and Managing Director and Editor of AirTransportNews. He was Deputy Mayor of Ekali, Greece, where he lives with his wife, Evgenia and his son, George. Mauro Oretti is Vice President, Sales & Marketing for SkyTeam. Read the same plot in another book

During reading this I felt that I had already read it, and in fact on deeper thought I had! I read a book published some years before this one and found the same consistancy of plot! The author learns from a third party that all is not what it seems in the universe, then she has an epiphany of sorts whilst standing by her car! It all resonated with what I had read in Cosmic Ordering Guide: Where Dreams Can Become Reality. Self-help books generally draw their precepts from three main sources: religion and spirituality or psychology. This one here seems to draw from another source!

Positive Energy

"Cosmic Energy" is definitely a great book that lives up to its title. I say this because Anne Jirsch has written an inspiring book on increasing the positive energy in one's life. My favorite part of the book is where she discusses space clearing suggestions, and why becoming organized is helpful in harnessing the cosmic energy. Anne's insights on how to be a magnet to increased love energy is very interesting. I appreciate that she shares such helpful information such as how to increase your love vibration, attract positive people into your life, and how to discover your life's purpose and make your dreams come true. Anne is also passionate about sharing some inspiring success stories in her book. Also, she shares somes creative and insightful advice on manifesting wealth and abundance. This is a great book to have if you have an interest in cosmic energy, increasing positive energy, and increasing your overall vibration. The title of the book (Cosmic Energy: How to Harness the Invisible Power Around You to Transform Your Life) is a healing and helpful guide for inner and outer changes in a person's life.

terrific book, horrible printing

I grew up with this and other wonderful books by Jacob Perelman, it was in its original language - Russian. Now I want my 10-year old son to read it, but he prefers English, so I found this translation at Amazon. I was surprised how inferior the English version is, especially considering an inflated $30 price. Looks like very poor photocopy from text typed on old typewriter. Not to mention horrendous quality of pictures. Yes, it is available for free download. Quality is the same (bad), but at least you can save your money.

a classic in physics

I still don't know why Amazon add the reviews from an edition to another even if these ones do not apply. For example, the reviews of natasha, 4-pointer, and Creepy Dude are for the edition with the jocker on the cover and do not apply to the book with the brown cover (you can easily see that. For example Creepy Dude review was published before even the brown book was published !). Amazon does this all the time and it is misleading for readers. Now here is my review (for the borwn cover book):

This book was and is still a best seller (specially in the USSR where millions of copies were sold there). At the heart of this success is the entertaining way in which physics notions and phenomena are presented. Anecdotes, comparisons, illustrations, and multiple questions and answers help understand these notions. The book comes in two volumes. The style is really witty. A must read for physics students and teenagers in general.

The book was very interesting and enlightening, but I was very disappointed with the translation/conversion from Russian. The text was totally unproofed leaving several unintelligible words and disjointed sentences.

I really wanted to love this book but…

I pre-ordered this book based on many things I had heard about Manressa, the restaurant. It was my kind of book. It had an admired chef, a restaurant that was drawing people to its obscure location, and new recipes for me to get my hands into. I waited months, and finally received my copy.

Manressa: an Edible Reflection, falls somewhere between The French
Laundry Cookbook and Grant Achez’s Alinea cookbook. In the French Laundry Cookbook, Thomas Keller’s goal is clean tastes; In Alinea, Achetz goes for a total sensory experience. David Kinch, of Manressa, focuses on terrior, or “sense of place.”
Keller aims at three bites per portion, Achetz (often) at one. Kinch at two.

Right there, that should tell the reader what he or she is getting into. This is not a book about casual food, nor even “fine food.” This is a book for someone who is very serious, and who appreciates and wants to experience what a driven chef has to offer. Manresssa (the book and the restaurant) is about tweezers-arranged preparations and attention, attention, attention, to detail.

I found the book to be almost all of what I wanted it to be. Manressa: an Edible Reflection is an intense book. David Kinch found his epiphanic moment when he connected with Love Apple Farm, and built on that experience, taking the well worn California mantra, “buy the best available product and cook in season,” and elevating it to new levels to try to create a “sense of place” for his restaurant. Love Apple farm is not simply a purveyor, it is an interactive player where Kinch not only purchases the produce, but indicates what he wants planted. Vegetables seldom, if ever, see refrigeration. Fresh means exactly that. The same is true of his other purveyors. Their bounty powers his menu. His relationship with them is extraordinary. Although he doesn’t forage like René Redzepi, (well, not all the time) he does devote considerable energy to making vegetables sing, and puts the proteins in a different relation to the presentation than what is commonly done.

The book is full of beautiful pictures and David Kinch’s text is interesting to read, at once philosophical and technical, and there is enough of his writing that the book is worth it for that alone. He is pragmatic enough to make use of any techniques and equipment that will bring him closer to producing what he feels will give the reader a sense place, of what is Manressa. He explains everything, from the butter which they make in house from locally sourced dairy products to things like infusing with peach leaves to add another dimension to an offering.

So why a four and not a five?

My problem with this book comes in relation to the recipes. I expected them to contain hard to find ingredients; locating places to purchase them is part of the fun of cooking at this level, and there is a list of purveyors provided. My problem is that none of the recipes have been tested or adapted to the home kitchen; all are exactly as they do them in the restaurant. Of course, it is Chef Kinch’s prerogative to do so, but in doing so, Chef Kinch has created a small but noticeable distance between himself and the reader like myself who wishes to use the recipes, that seems to belie his desire to “share” Manressa. Even if I obtain everything needed, will I be able to cook them in my kitchen?

If the reader turns to the “How to use this book,” section, he or she is exhorted to try more ambitious recipes, but “ambition” sometimes translates into “equipment.” The difficulties of a number of the well-spelled out recipes often have less to do with ambitiously following steps or even obtaining materials, and more to do with having a combi-oven (one that introduces steam…you can buy a .6 cubic foot countertop one for only $300 that will just about hold a small chicken).

This means, for example, that his interesting method of roasting, as time consuming as it is, probably would not work with my oven.

I have cooked recipes from enough high end restaurants to know that chefs at this end of the spectrum have access to high end equipment. Many of them, however, when writing a book for mass distribution, take that situation into account and offer alternatives or home testing. (Thomas Keller in Bouchon Bakery offers, for example, a tested chain-rock-super soaker squirt gun method to put steam into a home oven for baking bread.) Those things are missing in Manressa. While some alternatives are offered, essentially, the reader is told that if you don’t have the high tech equipment (and sometimes the “low tech” equipment that he uses for making butter), then, for many of the recipes, well…you are on your own.

Readers who have purchased, or are considering purchasing the book for other reasons, or who own super high-tech equipment, may, understandably, see things differently. For me, although I can understand all of the reasons why the recipes were not adapted for, or tested in, the home kitchen and could even find myself defending those reasons, still, the distance was a little disappointing. Testing in a home kitchen would have, for me, put this book over the top.

There are also some other admittedly nit-picking items. A small item was the de rigor use well worn mantra of getting the best materials, and treating them respectfully. Use them in season and buy locally, unless you are speaking about truffles, foi gras, and caviar (maybe lobster, too?). I have heard it over many years, and have come to question it. Shouldn’t one of the responsibilities of a chef be to locate and bring forth the potential in the bounty he or she is offered? Should there be no fried green tomatoes because they are not perfectly ripe, or tomato water from over ripe tomatoes?

Another item just proved annoying. The book ended with an abstract and somewhat gratuitous stream of consciousness epilogue which appeared to try to capture the essence of David Kinch. In it there was a line about David Kinch seldom using “I.” I found “I” many, many times in the book, and it should be so. This is, after all, his book, and his dream, so why present him as something that he isn’t?

I like the book, and I am fascinated by the author. I thumb through it often. I think that most people interested in restaurants at this level will find it an excellent read. Being stubborn, I may try, with the equipment I have, to approximate some of the more difficult ones anyway, and see what happens. Maybe converting things on my own is David Kinch’s challenge to readers like me

At Manresa, David Kinch is a Quiet Arbiter of Vegetable Focused Cuisine.

How can I begin to be objective about David Kinch, and about his restaurant Manresa? I came to know Manresa following the trail of Jeremy Fox after he left Charleston for the West Coast. I think the vegetable focused, micro seasonal approach of Manresa, along with its unique relationship with Love Apple Farms, played a pivotal role for Fox as he developed his own voice. A voice that would eventually earn him a Michelin star at Ubuntu, a vegetarian restaurant above a yoga studio in Napa. But I digress...

Manresa's cuisine is not only beautiful, but thoughtful. Every component is there because it needs to be there, period. Consider his dish "Into the Vegetable Garden." It's been on the menu for several years, but continues to evolve on a daily basis depending upon what walks in the kitchen door from Love Apple Farms. It was inspired by Michelle Bras' "Gargouillou," a composed salad dish that includes 50-60 components. (A dish that's also been interpreted by the likes of Grant Achatz, Paul Virant and Daniel Patterson FYI.)

I greatly admire David Kinch from afar. His cuisine reflects time and place. He is transparent about his sourcing, inspiration and technique. He continues to lead, teach and inspire. After a fire very nearly claimed Manresa in 2014, David took the rebuild time to plan a bakery that these days is now crushing it. This year, the culinary community eagerly looks forward to his opening of The Bywater, a casual, New Orleans themed eatery with David Morgan, a chef from John Besh's Restaurant August in NOLA. Kinch grew up in New Orleans, and counts 2 years spent at Commander's Palace among the first of his jobs at 16, so in a way, The Bywater marks a return to his past. I know it will be delicious.

By now you see what I mean- it's hard to be objective about David Kinch and his restaurant Manresa. In my estimation, the Manresa cookbook is one of a handful of essential reads / purchases of the past 5 years.

Wonderful culinary work

This is a cookbook in name, only. It has detailed recipes, but it's more a meditation on food and cooking by a fabulously inventive chef whom embraced the "localvore" philosophy long before it became a trend. One of Kinch's approaches is a 3-ingredient combination, where the last one is the surprise. I appreciated learning how he thinks about preparing a dish, including what to leave out.

The photos are truly fantastic: I've never seen a culinary book that had better. If you one day get the chance to eat at Manresa or to visit Love Apple Farms for the first time, you're in for a profound experience.

This is a violent story, more horrifying than its gory predecessors (Goldilocks; Beauty and the Beast, but very well written and a natural attraction for McBain fans.

About the Author

Born in New York, Evan Hunter (1926–2005) wrote the screen play for Hitchcock’s The Birds in 1963. He received the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America and is one of three American writers to be awarded the Diamond Dagger for a lifetime of achievement by the British Crime Writers Association.

Under the name Ed McBain, he authored the sprawling 87th Precinct series—the longest, most varied crime series in the world—which includes fifty-five novels about a fictional team of policemen, and thirteen novels in the Matthew Hope series featuring an up-and-coming lawyer in the Florida Gulf Coast. Known for tackling controversial content with a thoughtful eye, he is the author of over eighty novels.

Painfully boring

This is a case where the reader can make or break a book. Paul Shay conveys no emotion or definition of character. It was so painful I barely got through the first cassette before I finally decided I couldn't listen to the book. I recently enjoyed McBain's Big, Bad, City so I like the author.

Cinderella Is Magic Without The Fairy Godmother

Of the two series that Ed McBain wrote in his career, the Matthew Hope novels are by far the sexiest. Also, Matthew's personal history runs alongside the plots of the various novels. The 87th Precinct series, which McBain started much earlier, eventually became more similar to the Matthew Hope novels later in its run. Even though Matthew Hope is a lawyer, the stories he tells in first person are reminiscent of the private eye genre, a definite contrast to the police procedurals of the 87th Precinct. While relating the story Matthew not only works on the case but at the same time examines and observes the idiosyncrasies of the people with whom he comes in contact. Ed McBain faithfully reports both the positives and the negatives of the human condition. Matthew, like the private eye, is more solitary and tentative in his relationships, especially after his marriage. He observes, he disects, he questions, etc. Along the way he also tries to maneuver his personal life when not consumed by a mystery. I am a great fan of Evan Hunter so I am biased, but I find these novels to be an easy read. Mr. McBain is always adept at surprising plot twists, orchestrated so well by his written sleight-of-hand that you don't see them coming, giving them more impact. The 87th Precinct novels are fantastic; I have read them for many years. The Matthew Hope novels, started later, are much different. There is violence and there is definitely sex. Although the novels are vastly different than the 87th Precinct ones, Mr. McBain's second series is just as entertaining but for different reasons. To me the Matthew Hope books much more resemble movies than the procedurals do. I love these books just as much as the first series. Considering the content, Cinderella, and the other novels in the series, may not be to everyone's liking, but I have never been disappointed by any of Mr. Hunter's two series of novels.

Not Worth Reading or listening to...

The author Ed McBain was one I had read before, I picked up a copy hoping to read an interesting mystery - in my opinion I had no luck today. If I could rate it below one star I would. It kept switching between characters, sometimes on the same page, and each one seemed to add less to the story than the preceding one. The real turn off for me was the the graphic knife killings, senseless and explicit violence doesn't make a mystery for me, it just seems to be too much like a slasher story and not worth my time.
