Superbly Moving look at Survival

Dr. Roberto Canessa (born 1953) provides a superbly personal look at surviving the plane crash high in the Andes Mountains in 1972, and his subsequent career as a pediatric cardiologist. In the book's first half, readers feel like we are there with the other survivors fighting for two months against bitter cold and searing hunger (Canessa’s knowledge as a medical student proved most helpful). Then we struggle along as Canessa and Nando Parrado endure a frightful expedition, climbing a huge mountain without much equipment or knowledge, then hiking another week through unforgiving terrain before finding cattle herders high in the foothills of Chile. Dr. Canessa switches gears about halfway through, and describes his life as a pediatrcic cardiologist. Readers share the triumphs and losses, and the pages are nicely enhanced by contributions from patients, their families, and others. Readers may shed tears at tributes to those like little Tomas the Great. Canessa admits to viewing his patients as akin to himself and the other crash survivors, struggling to live in the wilderness of heart defects against difficult odds.
This moving book reads very quickly (I actually wished it was longer). Readers may also enjoy ALIVE (by Piers Paul Reid) and MIRACLE IN THE ANDES (by Nando Parrado), equally-superb accounts of the plane crash and struggle to survive.
